It’s such a painfully slow news day that I’m going to commit the New Cardinal Sin of Movie News Reporting, and do the old shortlist post.
According to Variety, these eight men are the current contenders:
Jose Padilha
Doug Liman
Antoine Fuqua
Mark Romanek
Justin Lin
Gavin O’Connor
James Mangold
Gary Shore (a man of commercials, looking for his big feature break.)
If Hugh Jackman prefers an old friend behind the camera, he might pick James Mangold, who helmed Kate and Leopold way back when. But if he wants the next best thing to Darren Aronofsky, he should pick Mark Romanek.
So, all together now: Romenek! Romanek! Romanek!

I can live with any of these dudes, honestly. They should go nuts and grab Kathryn Bigelow, I feel she could make a kick-ass Wolverine movie.
Romanek will be just as likely to sign on then bail on it as Aranofsky. Let’s face it, directors who see themselves as high minded artistes are not the type to put up with Fox’s bullshit.
Or how ’bout no more Wolverine movies? Yeah, that sounds about right.
Joe Wright or bust.
I agree with Jesse T. I watched the first XMen movie with a jaundiced eye, (quite painful for a man my age) and still got nearly weepy for the single solitary shot of Colosus. And he wasn’t even my favorite character as a kid. Don’t get me started on Nightcrawler praying the Rosary. Niagra Falls. Bits like that were pitch-perfect.
Only watched the last 15 minutes of the first XWolverine and it was sad. Like Lynch’s Dune, they cut out all the fun, love, and wonder. This is a property that Fox will never turn loose with a fan, which is the only person that will get it. So, no. No more Wolverine movies. Ev–ver.
Elisabeth Rappe, Justin Lin, might be good, but I would definitely prefer…Ryuhei Kitamura, as he delivered…Kick-Ass Action with, Azumi, Versus and Godzilla Final Wars! Please not, Antoine (He’el)…FUQUA, Up Wolverine so hard, that will end the potential franchise! What has…Mark Romanek directed?
What’s Nora Ephron up to these days?
Werner Herzog. Do it.
Nobody on this list gets my juices flowing…
