Moments ago Peter Jackson confirmed, via his Facebook page, that Orlando Bloom would indeed be reprising his role as Legolas in The Hobbit, at least for Part 1. Says the man himself:
“Ten years ago, Orlando Bloom created an iconic character with his portrayal of Legolas. I’m excited to announce today that we’ll be revisiting Middle Earth with him once more. I’m thrilled to be working with Orlando again. Funny thing is, I look older—and he doesn’t! I guess that’s why he makes such a wonderful elf.”
Considering that he doesn’t appear in the book itself, it’s an interesting (if already heavily rumored) announcement. Peter Jackson can do what he wants. He can introduce a tap-dancing clown into these 2 films and I think people will embrace it.

I assume he’ll appear in the frame story whose only point is to have cameos from LOTR characters so the slower audience members can make the connection between the two.
I’m just glad Bloom was able to find time in his busy schedule of being irrelevant to be a part of this.
No reason for him not to show up in the narrative of the story. Bilbo goes to Mirkwood. Legolas is an elf from Mirkwood. Elves are immortal. Even if he pulls a Lando-in-Jabba’s-Palace type of cameo, it’s not like it’s world-breaking for him to show up.
Are they making The Hobbit or LOTR prequels? There is no integral reason for Legolas to be farting around.
well, considering that The Lord of the Rings book were a sequel to The Hobbit, making the films out of oreder DOES make Hobbit a prequel to the Lord films. I don’t want to see Legolas joining the crew of Bilbo, Gandalf, and the dwarves on their adventure, but there is no reason they can’t encounter him as just one of the elves when they meet them.
…also, a quick check of wikipedia shows that the elf king the company meets in The Hobbit was in fact Legolas’ father. so it wouldn”t be a stupid cameo to have him also there. I mean, it’s not like Anakin building C3PO bad. It actually makes sense.
My problem isn’t a cameo appearance. I’m cool with that. My problem is you don’t hire Orlando Bloom and fly him to New Zealand for a five minute cameo. He’s going to have a largish role and that’s stupid given he’s not even referenced in the book.
Has Bloom done anything since Pirates 3? I don’t think it’s too hard to beleive he’d be down for flying to New Zealand to film a five or ten minute part.
If you’re Peter Jackson you can do whatever the fuck you want. Flying him to NZ, pittance. He owns half of Miramar so putting him up for the stay, pittance. If there’s any snow I imagine Bloom will take in a bit of skiing, do a walk on, collect his paycheck and say “thankyou and goodbye”.
Since there aren’t many women in The Hobbit, he will have to do. Legolas role in the Hobbit = Arwen’s role in LOTR. He is almost as pretty
No way Liv Tyler is prettier than Orlando Bloom. It can be proven with an abacus.
Legolas’s dad was the king in Mirkwood. No reason to believe that Legolas wasn’t one of the elves who captured the dwarves or was in the court of the king. Just because he wasn’t named in the book doesn’t mean he wasn’t in the book.
