The trailer for the upcoming Brad Pitt / Jonah Hill film, Moneyball, is now over at Yahoo! Movies. The film is directed by Bennett Miller (Capote) and is based on the book of the same name by Michael M. Lewis that tells the story of Oakland Athletics GM Billy Beane. Beane took over the front office for the A’s in 1998 and used sabermetric techniques to keep the team competitive after his payroll was slashed. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Robin Wright, Chris Pratt also star.
A certain bearded webmaster / baseball nut could probably tell you what Beane had for breakfast today. But as he’s not available, I go by what I see in the trailer, which looks pretty good.
Moneyball is in theatres on September 23rd.

SPY GAME 2
Looks good to me and I’ll certainly check it out, but I’m not sure about holding up Beane and the A’s as proof of the supreriority of sabermetric principals. Not saying that I don’t agree with cold analysis over gut, just that an analysis of the A’s record reveals that successful seasons (qualifying for post-season and progressing) are outliers for the A’s. In the 14 years (including the season to date) that Beane has been GM his teams have an average winning percentage of around .529. 2001/02 were glorious years for the A’s, but they got booted from the LDS (as they have every year they made it). I understand that that result is fantastic for a bottom-feeder, but the Rays and Marlins have done it better. If the goal is a World Championship, then this guy is bollocks.
This trailer looks fucking great. I know jack shit about baseball other than I really like to watch it. The stats, ins and outs, I’ve never really had the mental capacity to understand. The tension of the game and how it goes down is what gets me. It’s thrilling to watch players be still and ready themselves for a decisive burst of action. Most other sports make me nauseous because everyone moves around so fucking much. Sabermetric is a a great word and makes me want to learn more about analysis. I’m also liking the aged Brad Pitt and find him hot for the first time since A River Runs Through It. I’m homo for MONEYBALL!
