The Daily Blam! has the scoop that Hellboy creator Mike Mignola is saying (in a kind of weirdly passive-aggressive way, check out the link) that Guillermo Del Toro is not interested in making Hellboy 3 anymore, despite claims a few years back that he had an end in mind to the trilogy. For fans of Del Toro’s fun and colorful films starring Ron Perlman as Big Red, this is sad news.
In my mind this basically means this series is dead dead dead. Del Toro’s films, though adored by a marginal group of fans (myself included, though I prefer the first film to the sequel, a sentiment that is not shared by most) were never successful in terms of box office numbers. The Golden Army only exists because Del Toro willed it to, and no studio in their right mind is going to pick up a franchise that has failed at bat twice, at two different studios. Maybe in some far flung distant future the franchise will get a reboot on some weird wave of nostalgia, but I think we’ll all be dead by then.
So be thankful for the miracle that these two films got made, and cherish them with all your heart. You will never know the icky outcome of Liz and Hellboy’s twin children, or see him become the Beast of the Apocalypse. Time to get to work on that fanfic.

I would like to know his ideas for the end of the trilogy,but, I am glad to hear this. Del Toro is the most frustrating film maker working today, there are so many interesting projects kicked around only for him to settle and make something like Pacific Rim. It does not peak my interest eventhough it could be good( heres hoping). I wonder if he regrets leaving the Hobbit now? I really hoped that after In the Mouth of Madness dried up he would have done his amazing sounding film about the boy who witnesses the apocalypse while going to the store. But, instead decided to make Pacific Rim. He has so much talent,but, wasts it…

I wanted to “LIKE” this to share the story on Facebook with my Friends…but it might look like I like this news, which I do not. This really sucks and I wish GDT would tell us what his plan was as NickP stated above me.

It’s probably for the best. Everything he said about his concept for Hellboy 3 indicated that the entire plot was going to be a blatant retread of the first one – bad guys learn that Hellboy is key to ending the world, try to direct him to do so, Hellboy resists his supposed destiny for the sake of Liz.
And I already saw that movie. It was good, but it’s a bit early for a remake.
I love the two Hellboy films. I’m kind of glad a film-maker can walk away from a franchise. I hope he can get back to Lovecraft! If there is anyone who can make Lovecraft (other than the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society) it is Del Toro.
While I am fairly certain that Guillermo will never get the opportunity to make HB3, I must remind everyone that these are the words of Mignola and not Guillermo’s. Guillermo has said many times that it is not likely to happen but never has he made such a decisive comment as the one Mike is putting in his mouth.
And, as for the plot, it is certainly not a retread but a very final ending to the story arc. One that would certainly rule out any further Hellboy movies.
I…Loved the Hellboy films and it is sad that they will not be given a proper ending. It is fine that GDT is passing on directing…HB3! Coincidently, I am…Passing, on his current and future films as well!
Funny, I thought they said awhile ago HB3 wasn’t going to happen cuz Ron basically said: “I’m getting too old for this shit.” Didn’t he say in some article that he’s just getting too long in tooth to put up with all those hours of prosthetics? Maybe I made that up in my head. . .
Ron did say that but an internet petition changed his mind and he said he would do it. He even chided Guillermo to go ahead and make the movie.

It still strikes me as odd, since Hellboy is a good place for Del Toro to get his Lovecraft on, in a way.
You’re kidding me right? You do know that all these ‘interesting projects’ he attaches himself to ultimately gets him screwed over. Every project, no matter what how interesting, how unique, hollywood won’t touch because all they care about is their profit margin.
They bait him along and then pull the rug from under his feet. This has happened dozens of times. Frankly he probably picked Pacific Rim because it was the only script that barely interested him that he would be allowed to make.
A man can’t waste his talents if he is never allowed to use them…
From what I hear. The story was going to be that the children and evil agents would have forced him along the path to the agent of the apocalypse and the story would have ended with liz killing hellboy to save their children and the world.
After rereading the article I must point out that Mike is NOT putting words in Guillermo’s mouth but rather referring to what Guillermo had told him. The original property is Mike’s and I will bet he is much closer to any intentions Guillermo has on it than anyone else. I haven’t read this firm of a statement from Guillermo but I will no doubt read something akin to this at some point as the question comes up way to often in the constant evolution of del Toro’s short list.
