I’m very skeptical of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It looks like it’ll be fun enough but I’m totally not convinced that we’re going to care about Caesar the chimp and the cutting-edge marriage of tech that brings it/him to “life”. Some of the stuff we’ve seen in trailers seems revolutionary and some makes my somewhat discerning eye send signals of disbelief into my brain.
Yahoo Movies has an extended clip full of simian action and John Lithgow making a bunch of weird faces only John Lithgow can get away with making and not be fired.
Thanks to the ever-searching Brian Henne.

i’m fuckin’ sold on this! ROTPOTA just jumped way up my can’t wait list.
The CGI is pretty good in and of itself, but the compositing (or whatever term I’m looking for) needs work. Caesar seems to be emanating an aura of blur in closeups, like when he comforts Lithgow’s character – his protruding facial hairs are sharp but the background between them is a blur.
Also, a Delta Force MMA fighter on PCP wouldn’t last that long with a chimpanzee, nor emerge with relatively few minor injuries; the ape would literally tear him to shreds. Unless one makes the quite possibly valid argument that with increased intelligence comes decreased strength.
This movie is going to bomb. Horribly, horribly, bomb. Yeah, the cgi work is fantastic, of course it is, it’s WETA. But these days? unless accompanied by equally ingenious execution (a fucking GORILLA leaping at a helicopter!?) I’m not impressed. Suspension of disbelief? Without knowing the larger story, the idea of of a dozen, dozens, hell, a hundred apes laying assault against any military force is laughable. Shoulda called this Gorillas in da Midst. Rise of the Planet of the Apes? As awkward as that tile is Monkey: Disestablishmentarianism would’ve been just as catchy
18.5 opening weekend
That clip sold me. The acting seemed a little off, but the ape effects were great and Caesar felt like a character, even though his interactions need some work.
I hope Caesar isn’t above slinging feces. When shit goes down, it should be real shit. Big fruity steamers flying through the air.
He probably uses toilet paper since he’s smart and all. Sorry.
Even against an even partially deployed metropolitan police force, these apes would suffer massive losses. And then explain to me how the apes manage to traverse the Midwest, let alone Texas, and take over? It’s laughable that in a country as heavily armed as the US, with hundreds of thousands of citizens in both our standing military and reserves, that apes released from a research facility could take down civilization. Unless of course, the brain mist makes them fuck/reproduce like rabbits, allows rapid growth/maturation, and the apes get a hold of some human-specific pathogen that they then deploy to the entire country en mass.
That said, as stupid as this film’s premise is its still going to make more sense than a Transfomers movie.
The site’s restraint in refraining from “monkey business” jokes in the headlines has been commendable.
No barrel of monkeys reference? Easy pickings.
That guy’s face would be a bloody mess after taking that initial beating from a chimp
IMHO they should have used a real chip and mocapp’d a face onto it. Also, no more Serkis. Is he the only human being simian enough to tackle these roles? What’s going on?
It’s good work if you can get it, Kate. Let the guy have his day, it’s not like he will be taking any rolls away from Robert Pattinson.
Mr. Brown, did you just write a sketch for SNL? Feels like the Patrick Swayze and Chris Farley scene.
The obvious solution to the travel question is MONKEY BIG RIG CONVOY MONTAGE.
Had he a face at all:

The genetically engineered chimp boy David, from Michael Crichton’s Next, certainly wasn’t.
