There you have it. Henry Cavill as Superman. What spectacular hair he has! Warner Bros. has released the first still from Zack Snyder’s The Man of Steel and it showcases a comic book hero whose arch rival is vaults.
I’m not a Superman fan at all but it looks pretty good. His cape is giant and that emblem on his chest is raised, which is a change. I wonder how fans are going to respond.

BURBANK, CA, August 4, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have provided the first look at the new “Man of Steel,” revealing star Henry Cavill as Superman in the film from director Zack Snyder.
The film also stars three-time Oscar® nominee Amy Adams (“The Fighter”) as Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane, and Oscar® nominee Laurence Fishburne (“What’s Love Got to Do with It”) as her editor-in-chief, Perry White. Starring as Clark Kent’s adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent, are Oscar® nominee Diane Lane (“Unfaithful”) and Academy Award® winner Kevin Costner (“Dances with Wolves”).Squaring off against the superhero are two other surviving Kryptonians, the villainous General Zod, played by Oscar® nominee Michael Shannon (“Revolutionary Road”), and Faora, Zod’s evil partner, played by Antje Traue. Also from Superman’s native Krypton are Lara Lor-Van, Superman’s mother, played by Julia Ormond, and Superman’s father, Jor-El, portrayed by Academy Award® winner Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”).
Rounding out the cast are Harry Lennix as U.S. military man General Swanwick, as well as Christopher Meloni as Colonel Hardy.“Man of Steel” is being produced by Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder. The screenplay was written by David S. Goyer, from a story by Goyer and Nolan, based upon Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster and published by DC Comics. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Yeah. Looks like Superman. With some serious hair gel. But, hey- all that flying around tends to mess up your ‘do.
I’ll definitely be seeing this, even if I have no real interest in Supes beyond his status as an iconic character and warm childhood movie theater memories of seeing Chris Reeve do his thing. Of course, that’s why I bothered with Superman Returns, and that didn’t work out so well… but the whole Zach Snyder/Christopher Nolan thing sounds positive to me, so…
I think the costume is a definite upgrade from the Singer version. The Singer version was basically underarmor with the small Superman “S”. I like that the cape is brighter than the Singer version. You can tell its brighter, even in this darkly lit picture. I am not so sure about the cape length, though…he’s not Spawn. The cape shouldn’t be that long. How is it functional? I could see it impairing flight…that’s a lot of cape.
I am not a fan of the slicked back hair. In my mind, Superman should always have the “curly q” on his forehead, or at least some hair hanging down. Also, his demeanor in this picture is a little too serious/dark. I mean, with the hair slicked back and the scowl, he looks more like a villain.
So I imagine this is a scene in the movie where Supes speed ramps his way through a bank vault? And where is the signature curly curl in the hair? That’s as much a part of his costume as anything else. I’m okay with the suit design but this is not one I am looking forward to, since it’s not Brandon Routh portraying the Man of Steel.
Red underwear is gone! Good choice.

Needs more S-curl and less stippling on the chest emblem and boots. Very wrong decision to texturize the ENTIRE costume.
The only good thing about it is that it appears he was thrown into that vault door. Means he may be punching something.

I realize this is still only a partial look of the costume, but it is Worlds Apart, from the…Less Than Super, man costume in Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns. Laurence Fishburne should be a…SUPERior Perry White to…Frank Langela’s Skelator, err…Perry White!
Actually, the S-symbol was raised (i.e., a separate piece, rather than just being drawn on the front of the suit) in “Lois and Clark” as well as in “Superman Returns.” And the suit was textured in “Returns” as well (though not as shiny, and the blue in this version is definitely darker). The whole texture thing got started with the first Spider-Man movie, I think. And though it definitely looked better on Spidey, I think it looks fine here as well.

He has a spit curl in other pictures, in civilian clothing.
Don’t mind the costume so much, but that expression on Superman’s face makes him look like a serial killer.
Note to Nolan: Just because Batman is an arguable nutcase, doesn’t mean Superman has to be one too.
He kinda reminds me of Lee Garner Jr. on “Mad Men.”
The pose, the expression and the smashed vault are definitely calculated. Edgy, moody, ‘dangerous’ Superman, anyone? Nope, didn’t think they’d be many takers.
WHAT HAS BEEN SEEN…
To echo some of the other comments, I like most of it. I hate the textured shield, and greatly dislike the textured boots. Otherwise, it’s one pic that gives me a general idea of supes, so I can’t be too picky yet.

He was a bit of an edgy ass kicker when he first appeared as the frustrated voice of the common man during the depression. He’d visit righteous beatdowns on corrupt politicians and the like, and to tell the truth I think I’d like to see a bit of that come back. He’s kind and just and all that, but he’s also an ass kicker. But I see determination in his face and not moodiness or edginess.
There’s a fine line between looking “determined” and looking “sociopathic”.
I will see what this will be bring.
It looks to be a potential good movie to give Supes the much needed boost to bring the franchise back on track. Even though i didn’t mind Brandon Routh i found him “youngish”. Both Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh were at the same age when they played Superman for the first time. Yet where Reeve bulked up and looked like a SUPERMAN the same could not be said for Routh. He looked like the successor of John Haymes Newton and Gerard Christopher for the TV series “The Adventures of Superboy”.
To defend, I thought Brandon Routh played and looked the part perfectly. Sure, he wasn’t the Rock in tights but he didn’t need to be. I admired the direction they took with him, squeaky clean and a bit mysterious and other-worldly. It’s just a shame it wasn’t a better film. There were certainly things to like and dislike, the least being asthmatic superkid (GROAN). But it’s 2011, Superman Returns is done and over with, no use crying over it now. A new film is on its way. I hope it’s good.
I love the new SpM suit but hate the new SuM costume. Perhaps it’s Cavil that is failing to sell it, but in general it’s an overtextured, militaristic design with the S logo inexplicably up right under his chin. Why can’t we revert back to the elegant texture of Singer’s film?
Note to BermudaMan: Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill probably have a tiny bit more to do with the creation of this image than Christopher Nolan. Seeing as they would be the director and the actor… and Nolan can be as much credited with it as David Goyer.
Not going to even delve into how ludicrous it is to nitpick a characters emotions and expression being extrapolated from a single image…
