In a move that speaks largely to the confidence Sony has in Marc Webb’s franchise reboot, they’ve just announced (via Deadline) that May 2nd, 2014 will see the release of The Amazing-Spider Man 2. Or The Amazinger Spider-Man. Or whatever you want to call it. Here’s what they said to Deadline:
“I think it speaks volumes about our confidence in what we are seeing on the new film and our desire to move quickly on the next installment.”
Well, in a way this at least assures the film won’t be a trainwreck. Actually, no, it doesn’t. It assures that they don’t care if it’s a trainwreck. I wasn’t a fan of the trailer, and plenty of people felt the same way. It’s the internet knee-jerk reaction that we’ve all come to expect and it’s warranted, as the trailer paints the film as serious in tone as Batman Begins. Which works for Batman. Spidey? Not so much. But again, it’s just a trailer. There’s plenty of hyperbole that should at least be spared until early test screening reports come flooding in.

Everyone needs to calm the fuck down on this movie already. We’ve seen next to nothing from it yet.
Also, when did the Raimi movies move up into such high esteem? The first and third films are painful garbage to watch. They were terrible when they came out, and most people hated them. The second one is merely okay. I think rebooting this character is the best thing that could be done.
I have no recollection of “Most people hating” the first movie.
Neither do I. In fact I seem to remember people talking up ther first two (especially #2) as the best Superhero movies to come out since the first Superman. The recent backlash against the Rami flicks is almost as odd as the retroactive hate for The Hangover.
However there is no doubt that Spidy 3 stunk.
Sounds like you might need to go back and watch those. The first and second are great. The third? That’s pretty much universally hated but it isn’t nearly as bad as, say, Green Lantern or either Fantastic Four movie.
I can’t speak for the rest of the world, but I’ve always found Raimi’s trilogy (yes, even 2) to be pretty by-the-numbers and kinda dull, with the origin sequence of #1 being the best part.
And I think I was the first person I’d ever heard of sitting in the theater during Hangover and wondering why I wasn’t laughing as hard as everyone else.
Michael Rabattino, This new Spider-Man looks…Amazing. It will easilly top the not so…Spectacular Spider-Man 2. Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3 are at least better than Spider-Man 2, as well. Green Lantern, to me, is…Alot better than any of the Spider-Man films.
From the footage they screened at Comic-Con from “Amazing Spider-man,” I’d say the movie is far less “serious” in tone than the trailer portrays. The footage they showed paints Spider-man closer to the original comics than to the darker tone of Batman Begins: in some ways even closer than the Raimi Spider-man (for example, the way Peter is portrayed in HS & how he interacts w/Gwen as the goofy awkward kid, or how much ‘fun’ he has with the web slinger on an early outing where he busts a mugger).
I guess basically what I’m saying it there hasn’t been enough material released to either praise or write-off “Amazing Spider-man.” If anything, I think studio marketers don’t know how to sell it either
I have to say, the Spiderman I grew up reading was a jaded and disappointed 30-year old whose wife was impossibly hot for what he offered, and his best friend was completely batshit insane on drugs and Goblin Gliders. That’s some dark shit. Much darker than a lot of people realize. While granted this isn’t the goofy 60’s era of Spiderman, this is the Spiderman I grew up with (I’m 27), and I’m happy to see my favorite Marvel hero (sue me, my love was forged as a little kid) being given a serious treatment instead of the high-gloss nonsense that Raimi brought to the table. I liked the first two “Spiderman” Raimi flicks, but I’m infinitely more excited for this new take.
It assures that Sony is desperate to not let the rights to this cash cow fall back into Marvel/Disney’s hands. Regardless of the objective “quality” of Amazing Spider-Man, I really feel like it’ll be little more than a pointless retread of what Raimi already did, even with Green Goblin and MJ swapped out for Lizard and Gwen Stacy. At least Emma Stone will almost certainly be better than Kirsten Dunst.
Have they cast the role of Spider-Man for the next reboot yet? The kid from Bucket & Skinner’s Epic Adventures might become available when his voice changes in 2021.
Sony has to keep churning out Spidey movies to keep the rights.
It’s a win/win.. either we keep getting movies, or Marvel get the rights back.
