Let me just start out by saying that this new poster for Red Tails kind of sucks…
I’m not going to go deep into why. I’ll simply leave it with this quick mockup of what I see in my head when I look at it…
Moving beyond that we have a new trailer that puts a huge focus on the action and spectacle of the WWII-era dog fighting. There effects do look to be pretty good, although still so persistent and overwhelming that they’re not groundbreakingly photo-real or anything.

But what this trailer is even more notable for is what it doesn’t show, and that’s much in the way of character. There’s enough dialogue and shots of humans to get across the film’s point, sell that Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard are involved, and promise an inspirational story, but even the trailer itself seems ashamed with how profoundly cheap and cheesy the film sounds. This is an important story, and I think it’s going to be quite disappointing to see it brought to life with all the artificiality and triumphant posturing of an expensive Lifetime movie. At least there’s some Bryan Cranston in it.
This flies into theaters on January 20th.
I don’t know what about this film is supposed to register as special, but perhaps it’s got you excited for one reason or another. Do tell: twitter, comments, boards.

That mockup is hilarious!
I think it looks more like an NES game. Which makes me kind of like it.
Something about the look and feel of that trailer makes me think of Pearl Harbour. Not a good sign.
1) I’ll admit that in a world of floating heads, this poster is fun. With that said, it seems less serious in tone than perhaps the subject matter calls for. It’s all SPEED RACER colors, and that mock up is just perfect in terms of capturing the tone of the piece
2) My hopes for this film (such as they were..) died as soon as I heard Lucas was upset with what the WIRE director turned in and demanded all sorts of reshoots. I wouldn’t be surprised if Lucas never saw THE WIRE in the first place, and my faith in his opinion as a barometer for good film is exactly nil

The kid in me hates not looking forward to a film simply because Lucas’s name is attached to it, but it’s become an involuntary reaction.
This is going to be shit, and I hope that it is universally recognized as such. George Lucas deserves no more chances.
I’m sure I’m not stating anything new when I say that the HBO movie “Tuskegee Airmen” already tread this ground. The only thing that this film looks like it is bringing to the table is a bigger budget, but honestly the effects look hokey. For a made for TV movie, I thought “Tuskegee Airmen” was a good film. It had a great cast including Larry Fishburne and coincidently, Cuba Gooding Jr. I don’t see based on the trailer what this is bringing to the table, looks like a retread to me.
I will concede that there have been instances in which there have been retreads of made for tv movies that were worth bringing to the big screen. Most notably, “Munich” was essentially the same story of “Sword Of Gideon” which was also a made for TV movie starring Steven Bauer. Spielberg’s version was far superior although it had issues of its own.
Again, I am skeptical that “Red Tails” will top “Tuskegee Airmen”.
