There’s not a ton to this story… Brett Ratner is producing the Oscars, and apparently Brett Ratner has offered the Oscars hosting gig to Eddie Murphy. Nothing shocking at all about the choice, given their collaboration on Tower Heist, and Murphy’s general need for a career pick-me-up.
So it’s not a done deal, but is as likely as not that well see the 84th Oscars hosted by Eddie Murphy.
So what do you think? Billy Crystal has been keen on the gig for a while (and will apparently be incorporated, if not as the host), but Eddie Murphy is a new name. Would you expect better ratings to result? Is there even a chance Murphy’s “performance” would have any teeth?

Wow. This news makes me feel absolutely nothing. Eddie Murphy has disappointed so many times in the last decade and a half that I can’t even muster up enough energy to be indifferent about the idea of him hosting the Oscars. And even if he does knock it out of the park and somehow manages to have some edge and show some creativity in his hosting duties, you know he’ll immediately squander the goodwill he earns by putting on a fat suit again or doing a film where he does nothing buy mug so hard that he threatens to tear his face in half. Oh Eddie…
I’m 23 years old and the only Murphy movie I like is Shrek and that’s only because I loved the first movie when it first came out in theaters. If I was 23 20 to 25 years ago, I think I would be psyched more then, than I am now at the prospect of him hosting in 2012. Maybe he’ll surprise me and other’s or maybe he’s always had it and never lost it, but needs something like the Oscars to offically “come back”.
I keep hoping that the Eddie Murphy of Beverly Hills Cop, Delirious, Coming to America, Saturday Night Live, 48 Hours and Harlem Nights (to name a few) is somewhere locked away, waiting to get out – and *this* could be it. But as discodaddy said abobe, we’ll probably get a the fat-suit Eddie.
But with that said, I really want to believe… so I’m all for it. I mean, if Hathaway and Franco can be allowed to bomb, why not someone who used to do comedy professionally back in the 80’s? I know Billy Crystal will rock – like I said, I just want to believe that Eddie could too.
I’m 24 years old and I’m not going to say that I’m an Eddie Murphy superfan or anything but I’ve seen Metro. Part of Eddie Murphy’s problem in that he wasted most of the nineties and all of the last ten years making some of the most pandering pieces of garbage imaginable – that’s a whole bunch of people who only know Eddie Murphy from their parents showing them what he used to be or the steaming mess of mediocrity that he’s become.
