Takeshi Kitano’s great, though this trailer’s adjective of “visionary” might be stretching it. He’s a good director and a good actor and whenever he releases a film it’s a special time. If you haven’t see Brother or Sonatine, you’re missing out. He’s also the face of Battle Royale, which is sadly how many folks best know him.
In America he hasn’t crossed over like I thought he would, but his films are still treated with respect. The trailer for his latest action/revenge flick Outrage is here and though the trailer sells it as “been there, done that” chances are good it’ll be a fun flick. He’s apparently already working on a sequel.
It’s coming this winter to VOD and theaters and if you like tough men and brutality you ought to visit some of the man’s early work.

Takeshi’s films leading up to Brother are fucking marvellous, he was untouchable in film-making. Brother is tainted by that ridiculous end in the car with Omar Epps.
He should be in The Expendables 2.
Outrage definitely IS a been there, done that kind of movie for Kitano, but that only means it’s worth watching. I enjoyed it but it’s not as artful as some of his other stuff–though it’s plenty brutal and mean-spirited.
Sonatine is the greatest existential gangester film ever made. My favourite of his is Hana-Bi. I think the mixture of pathos and violence is perfectly balanced.
Hana-Bi is one of the few films where as soon as it ended I skipped straight back to scene one. Kikujiro would be my personal favourite though.
