Thus far all we have known about the Evil Dead remake is that there is a director attached, Fede Alvarez, and the script was being written by Diablo Cody. The picture is becoming a bit more clear though, as now a short plot synopsis has been revealed, and… it’s pretty lame:
The “new spin” is the motivation behind the trip, with the lead character taking his younger sister to the family’s cabin to help her kick her drug addiction. Without her drugs she becomes insane and difficult to control, which makes it impossible to see that she’s actually possessed.
This come from Bloody Disgusting, who nabbed the scoop and share my sentiment that this is pretty disappointing. Taking her to the cabin to kick a drug addiction? Whatever happened to a bunch of college kids just going up to a remote cabin to party and get laid? Do we really need any other motivation?
Also, it must be one hell of a drug that she’s on, to make it seem like she’s possessed. Either way, this seems like they’re trying to shoe horn in some silly drama, and that doesn’t seem like something this kind of movie needs. I’m not a hater of remakes (Dawn Of The Dead was excellent, and I may be one of the few fans of the newer The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, along with the awesome The Crazies), but this should just be college kids vs. demons.
If anything, an angle they could revisit from the original is the fact that for the most part, it’s women who are possessed and attacking the men. They could manage all sorts of social commentary exploiting that angle. That would be especially potent in this day and age, where masculinity has slipped out of film to some extent.
I’ll still be seeing it when it’s finally released, just out of curiosity.

LOL, Ash Williams – Original Girly Man.
I’m guessing the fresh meat will be coming from local hicks and some random partiers nearby. It generally sounds like the rehab/cold turkey idea has been taken from another spec script and crow-barred into the Evil Dead location.
The rape trees could attack the guys this time.
I once emailed Bruce Campbell on the subject of the remake. He responded, simply: “You don’t have two kids to send to college, do you?”
“Also, it must be one hell of a drug that she’s on, to make it seem like she’s possessed.”
If you read the plot summary it doesn’t say the drugs make her seem possessed, it’s the withdrawal symptoms from not having the drug that does it, which is somewhat logical.
It’s not.
That tentative synopsis is extra gay and sounds like the plot to some direct-to-streaming/dvd dreck, only this will get a theatrical release because its hijacking the name of a movie beloved the world over. I don’t give 1.38 shits that Hollywood is remaking turds like Footloose but the shitty remake has become de rigueur for the horror market. We need to vote with our dollars and refuse to buy tickets for this kind of blatant cash grab. I refuse to see The Thing for that reason, and if this ever hits screens I won’t be in line. What’s the point of paying to see something try and rip off perfection? You’ll only be disappointed. Every single time.
Atleast its different. I really dont want another “Lets all go to a cabin and drink, do drugs and have sex” kind of plot. Its boring and cliche and movies have been doing it since the 70’s. Why are you so against something different? You bitch when remakes do nothing different, then you bitch when they do something new? For starter they only released a paragraph of plot detail, it says nothing about the movie than can be commented on. Nothing about the characters, the script ideas or the theme and mood they will be going for. Me, i think this film will be a serious horror movie and the less connections to the original the better….meaning no Ash.
We all love Evil Dead, but they need this movie to stand on its own and not full of winks and nods to the original.
John Carpenter showed how to do a remake right, bring a lot of skill and something fresh to the table and it will work. Nowadays a remake, most especially in the horror genre, is just a way to capitalize on an iconic title to put asses in seats. Perhaps this remake will be awesome, a truly ingenious take on the material like Carpenter’s The Thing was or at least entertaining cinematic junk food like the Piranha remake. But seeing how those are the very rare exceptions to the rule, I’m betting this will just be hackwork making a buck on the back of a much more talented filmmaker.
I would be happy with Evil Dead the Musical The Movie!
Ah, but it’s money in the bank, you see? Even someone who knows better – and has already decided (based on a “scoop” they have not themselves verified) that the new “take” is disappointing – stands in line to purchase a ticket!
ASS the movie is a mere generation away . . .
ARE YOU TRYING TO TELL ME THAT THEY ARE SAYING THEIR POSSESSIONS ARE SO LAME YOU COULDNT TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DRUG WITHDRAWLS AND DEMONIC POSSESSION??!??! HOW FUCKING STUPID IS HOLLYWOOD AND DIABLO CODY TO TAKE SUCH SACRED SOURCE MATERIAL AND LITERALLY RAPE IT WITH A PLUNGER WOODEN STICK FIRST???? ORGINAL POSSESSION LOOKED LIKE, WHITE EYES, BLACK BULGING VEINS ALL OVER BODY, ABILITY TO FLOAT AND MUTLIATE HIM/HERSELF. THIS VERSION- COLD SWEATS AND BAD ATTITUDE?? GOD HOW LAME!
A generation away? ASS V: A New Beginning is already in the can and in post.
Marijuana: The Devil’s Weed!
This is my guess for what will be different about this one, and I’m sorry if they end up being spoilers for something that still isn’t going to happen for like 2 more years:
Ash will be a girl. His name WAS Ashley, right? I can see them making it a female protagonist just for the sake of making it a female protagonist, and there will be an in-joke every 2 minutes to remind us that this Ash isn’t a dude.
Nothing will actually happen, as it will all be in the person’s head, or some lame shit like that, or there won’t end up being any sort of real supernatural element. The whole “trying to get over a drug addiction” thing is like a big tip-off that it could go in that direction.
Anyway, does anyone else think that Diablo Cody must have been a horrible stripper? I can only imagine how she must have talked guys out of having boners, how frustrating it must have been to decipher whatever made up slang she used to try to talk them into a lap dance…
@greg: Capslock is so my grandmother on AOL.
Masculinity has slipped out of film? Uh…what? Can’t say that I see that myself, if anything we’re seeing a batch of films and television intent on pushing heteronormativity.
Fuck! Another remake? How about we have a remake of a movie that’s not even released yet? I’ll give it two years. Anyway, thanks for fucking up a classic movie. Rehab? How many Amy Winestone or Lohan references/jokes will be in it? Screw today’s hollywood, I hate them all. What happened to just making good movies and not having to make a cash cow? Fucking “blockbusters” ruined film. Hitchcock is rolling in his grave.
