When your movie is loaded with actors like Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Javier Bardem, and Ralph Fiennes it’s not exactly an easy task to add much more poise and class to your pool of talent. Sure, you might match it with a good name, but it’s hard to elevate the curve much further upwards. Sam Mendes figured out a way to do so though, by bringing in the legendary Albert Finney to play a government official with oversight of MI6, which promises delightful friction between Finney and Dench.
And no, I’m not going to back off that sentence. You picture that friction: picture it!
This will be Finney’s return to the big screen after a career hiatus due to a bout with cancer. Fortunately the five-time Oscar nominee is feeling ready to stand before a camera again, and in fact not only just for his first turn in a Bond film, but he’s even up for a reprise of his role in the American Bourne franchise!
News is about to start pouring out from Mendes’ Bond film, as filming begins next week and November will bring a press conference with more details. One assumes a confirmation of the rumored Skyfall title will come then, unless they have an entirely different moniker to announce.

This is great news for the new Bond pic. I like Albert Finney, and do like what Sam Mendes and Michael J Wilson and Barbara Broccolli are bringing to the table. I am curious though, how will the current filmmakers go about paying tribute to the legendary John Barry who passed away earlier this year. He was an enormous asset to the Bond film franchise.

The new Bond films’ attempts to be more like the Bourne trilogy continue unabated. What, were Jon Voight and Henry Czerny not returning calls? Oh wait. That’d be too much like Mission Impossible 1 or Clear And Present Danger. What about Jeffrey Wright? Oh, fuck. We already have him. Michael Gambon? No. Too much like Albert Finney. Fuck it. Just call Albert Finney.
Seriously. I love Casino Royale (although the damn card game was screaming out for a montage!), and Quantum Of Solace has its moments, but Finney in another part three of a spy series is just fucking pushing it. Not to mention having the director of Kevin Spacey’s dirty old man movie in charge seriously raises question marks for me. I mean, Sam Mendes is a good director. But he seems totally wrong for Bond. I hope they prove me wrong (meaning a good second unit director will make Mendes look credible. Unless he decides not to have one.).
