Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi have had a lot of good luck with New Zealand. They filmed the Hercules and Xena series there (Tapert even married Kiwi native, Lucy Lawless) and it seems that they’re continuing that tradition via their Ghosthouse Productions by bringing The Evil Dead remake down south. I wish they would just film it in Tennessee or North Carolina again, but that’s not happening.
With this quick location news comes a cast of characters list. A cast list that I’m not all that crazy about…
Casting is currently underway for the friends, David, Natalie, Eric, Olivia, and Mia. David is a mechanic and is engaged to Natalie. Mia is the friend who is heading to the cabin to detox; Olivia is her best friend/nurse. Eric, presumably, is the kid who unleashes the demons.
The “detox” bit remember, was reported by myself some time ago as being the “mask” for the demonic possession. I do like how they’re keeping it once again as 2 men and 3 women, but engaged? Nurse? I know it sounds like I’m being overly harsh, but I just want things simplified. Although the mechanic bit makes me think of that rumored Evil Dead 4 plot that was set at a gas station. I’m still keeping myself open minded towards. it. For the time being.

…yeah, I don’t think I’ll be first in line for this one. Or in line at all.
If it makes enough cash at the box office to finally convince Sam & Bruce to move forward with an EVIL DEAD 4, terrific…but the fact this particular remake is under way only proves that any lingering interest they might have left for the franchise is purely monetary. Heck, Sam Raimi shut down FREDDY VS. JASON VS. ASH in favour of a remake simply because one party offered him a bigger check.
