I guess my worship of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, lustily reviewing them in every incarnation, and making them all crest the top three of each year’s “best of” lists isn’t good enough for some fanboys with blinders on as my dissatisfaction with yesterday’s trailer caused some serious close-minded hate to manifest. Ah, another new wave of internet hotheads. As an aside, I’ve watched the teaser about ten more times and still am not feeling it.
I feel a little better about the first official one sheet for next December’s must-see flick. Here it is. I’ll shut my trap now.

The more I see, the more this is looking like a pointless cash grab. Bilbo is leaving his comfy Hobbit condo and going off for a magnificent adventure. Big. Fucking. Deal. I can’t muster any excitement for this at all.
Were you expecting an adaptation of The Hobbit where Bilbo doesn’t leave his comfy Hobbit condo and go off on a magnificent adventure?
Or maybe expecting a movie to be made that refused to do any promotion or advertising whatsoever, and was intended to lose money?
Apparently you can barely muster a coherent argument, you fucking simp.
I don’t think it should have been made
Then I guess we can all be thankful your estimation of what should exist is an entirely irrelevant metric for anything.
Should or should not be made is beside the point. It looks fine -the song is the best thing- but it doesn’t really look like a trailer for the Hobbit; it looks like deleted scenes from Lord of the Rings with too much sentimentality, too much looking back, when things are only beginning for our Hobbits. Would’ve been better to stick with more Hobbity content rather returning to emphasise so strongly the ring and Gollum at the very end which isn’t what the Hobbit is about. I do have concerns with it looking so like LOTR in texture and feel; Del Toro’s eye would’ve been a nice complement to Weta’s middle-Earth.
Obviously there’s a ton of stuff to come but the emphasis is wrong in this teaser and it really didn’t need to be released so early.
Couldn’t have said it better myself! Poster looks great!
I agree with this. But you know the studio (and probably Jackson) were deliberately going for the “LOTR was awesome, here’s more” approach. Which is fine for the advertising at this point. i just hope the movies don’t take that approach. Like you said, this is about things beginning for the Hobbits, the call to adventure, and opening up the larger world to a reluctant hero.
Wow, there’s a really heavy smell of burnt pussy hair in here…
Oh look – a poster!!
Ah, the internet. Where people scrutinize things through a microscope before they bother just looking at them.
With the exception of the Taliban nothing hates like a butt-hurt Fan-Boy.
I really want to get jazzed about this, but that trailer does look like a commercial for LoTR: The Extended Extended Edition. It isn’t that The Hobbit should or shouldn’t be made (it should, of course, and thank you very much Mr. Jackson for it) — but that it should’ve maybe been made first.
Also, it would’ve been marvelous to see del Toro’s vision of the story.
