Oh how this hits the sweet spot, doesn’t it? Beautiful, evocative, and furthering the mystery that this film has become. There’s no movie I’m looking more forward to right now than Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. Partly because Alien is an all-timer for me and partly because HAVE YOU SEEN THE TRAILER? I’ve been avoiding all spoilers on this for a while now, but there’s nothing about this picture that feels spoilery to me.
The pic was a bit of viral marketing tied in with a domain registered to the evil, filthy, corrupt Weyland Industries (click the image if you want to go to the site and see it bigger). The room pictured is much larger than it initially comes off. Note the tiny human taking it all in. Are we finally seeing all of that Space Jockey tech from Alien in action? Between this and that Peter Weyland TED talk it would appear as if the promotion of the film is in full swing.

Is it me, or is Prometheus stealing The Dark Knight Rises’ thunder with a far superior promotional campaign? In the words of Christian Bale, the tidbits Prometheus is steadily whetting our appetite with is making Nolan’s team look like “fucking amateurs”.
I’m not sure TDKR needs to promote itself at this point. But I will say that these guys are taking an approach akin to The Dark Knight viral from a few years back.
While I admit the trailer is way better than I was expecting…I just don’t want to know where the aliens came from. I never once have watched any of the first 3 movies and thought(spoiler?) “were they sent here by “God’s” living on a distant planet to punish us for stealing their technology?”. I think what makes the aliens great is that they are by definition “foreign” and “unknown”. That is what makes them scary and intriguing. If this movie goes where I think it is going, are the going to retitle the first three movies GleepGlop-ites? Because if they say they come a definite place, they are no longer alien. They are now known and definable, and thus free of the mystique that has made them so special all these years.
RCA, I take it then that you are NOT a fan of Aliens…because by showing the xenomorph’s life cycle in detail (alien Queen etc) it took away most of the ambiguities out of the creature. Aliens sucked the “mystique” out of the beast 25 years ago, so quit your half-assed trolling.
Agree with this. “Space Gods” > “Space Bugs” in terms of ALIEN. I have no problem with the two movies splitting off into two different universes at this point. I’d totally watch say an Aliens TV Series following the Aliens as Space Bugs concept. But this shit here is really weird and feels so big and…cinematic.
RCA – ignore the douche bags who just want to jump up and insult the folks who don’t share their opinions, I’d like to discuss your stance. I definitely see your point – I have had many artistic favorites ruined by overexplanation/exposure – whether they be bands, films, characters (wolverine anybody?). That being said I don’t think the film is really going to be as definitive or “spoiling” to the mystique of the alien creature. Perhaps you’ve read more than I have because I’m avoiding soooo much marketing for Prometheus because like Tim this is my most eagerly awaited film – in a looooong time. I think Scott’s constant distancing tactics for the film from the aliens franchise, despite everyone apparently knowing the beloved creatures will appear at the end of the film, is his way of saying, “Yeah, this is not the prequel to Alien because Prometheus is NOT ABOUT the aliens. The Xenomorphs make an appearance because it will be a cool way to tie my ‘universe’ together and grant a ‘big picture’ feeling to my work, but this isn’t the “this + that = The Aliens”
Or at least I hope that’s what he’s saying. But again, I’ve even avoided the TED viral (though I imagine I’m going to break on that one eventually).
