Tim Burton and Johnny Depp have done some great work (Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood), some decent work (Sweeney Todd, Sleepy Hollow) and some not-so-great work (everything else) together. But color me surprised, this trailer goes a long way in selling me on Dark Shadows. Granted, my extremely low expectations coupled with the notion this film’s existence is an anomaly may have something to do with it. But I’ll bite, I dig the comedic take. If 21 Jump Street has taught me anything, it’s that there can be a place in our cinemas for fresh takes on tired television concepts. There’s also a place for filmmakers that take chances with new ideas and material, but no one who makes these decisions seems terribly concerned.
Still, it’s kind of sad that Burton seems resigned to playing this closely to his comfort zone at this stage in his career. So this could just as easily turn out to be two hours of a man playing with his goth action figures. What did you think of the trailer?

What I wouldn’t give to get another Big Fish out of this guy.
Thanks for that mental image! =-)
I’m actually relieved and pleased they’re playing this as straight up comedy. From the trailer, at least, it looks like it could be Burton’s most straight-forwardly fun movie in ages. Let’s hope it’s more Pee Wee/Beetlejuice in terms of humour than the hit-and-miss goofiness of Mars Attacks! (although I do have a soft spot for that flick).
Oh, and speaking of Beetlejuice, please could the recent rumblings of a Keaton/Burton sequel come to fruition, Movie Gods! (But what’s the betting he’ll manage to squeeze Depp and his miss us in there?? Heh).
Doh, that penultimate line is supposed to read ‘Depp and his missus’. Dang iPad!
The trailer does show us that the movie is meant to be a comedy; it doesn’t unfortunately, show us that the movie manages to be funny. I’m uncertain, but at least interested, which is more than I could say before I saw the trailer.
I’m in. Trailer had me laughing a lot more than I was expecting.
Why must this be IMAX or was that just a mistake at the end of the trailer?
I thought this was a fan-made trailer at first. Burton’s not even trying anymore. I’d love to read what a die hard Dark Shadows fan feels about this lazy trailer.
This looks like utter crap. Burton doesnt want to make a Addams Family why???? I am not a huge fan of the original show but at least seen it enough to know what a horrible version this is going to be. All we need is another fish out of water story for cheap laughs set in the 70s.
