Every so often I like to take a break from mainlining movies based on comic books and action figures to see films in languages I do not understand. I think this new trailer for Argentine director Adrian Garcia Bogliano’s Penumbra has earned my ticket purchase when it gets the select cities treatment April 20th (also available VOD courtesy of IFC Midnight).
I like the creepy tone and immersive atmosphere Bogliano has put together here. This looks like it could be a tense ride and I’m digging the cultish, supernatural vibe as well. Looking forward to checking this one out. What do you think?

Hell yes. Saw this at FF last year and absolutely loved it. The payoff at the end is very well-played.
Can someone help me out? Anyone know the name of that Spanish-Language movie about people who invade a home and take the family hostage ala “Funny Games” or “The Strangers”. This movie at least had the feel of those movies based on the trailer. It was mentioned on this site before, but I can’t search for it, since I don’t know the name. It was supposedly very good and maybe from 2011? The trailer was on here once also. Any idea?
Oh, I thought maybe this was an adaptation of the video game series. While experience tells me that video game movies are almost always crap, I couldn’t help but be disappointed that it wasn’t. (Penumbra is one of the few games I stopped playing because it frightened me too much.) That said, should I continue to hear good word of mouth on this, I’ll definitely check it out.
Never mind. It was called “Kidnapped”. Clever title.
Jaume Balagueró’s Darkness (2002) anyone? I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the Ouroboros reference, amongst other things, like the characteristic “camera shaking” in nicely chosen moments, not to mention the whole premise of the flick (I love supernatural movies with evils grounded in christian mythology). Worth checking out IMO, can’t understand why IMDB treated it so harshly…
That movie is fucking relentless! It’s on Netflix Watch Instantly right now!
I know! I went to netflix.com to see if it was available for rent, and pleasantly added it to my instant queue. My fiancee is gone for the night (in no way would she watch it), so I know what I’ll be doing tonight. I heard it’s insane.
I just watched “Kidnapped” last night. I thought all the hype was overblown………until I saw the ending. H0. LY. SHIT.
