Confirmed: There will still be a Marvel Studios after Avengers. They’re working on lining up projects beyond Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 and tops on the list of things to do is securing a director for a sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger. Fine people of Vulture, take it away!
Insiders tell us that a field of ten directors has been whittled to just three for the follow-up to last summer’s hit: George Nolfi, the writer-director of The Adjustment Bureau; F. Gary Gray, best known for directing The Italian Job; and, naturally …Community‘s Anthony and Joseph Russo?
The Community guys? Why not. They did direct You, Me and Dupree, but I’ve already forgiven them for that. I didn’t exactly hate Joe Johnston’s take with the first film, but considering that this movie will most-likely take place in the present day I can’t begrudge Marvel wanting a fresh approach. Johnston, who’s shooting Not Safe for Work right now, works best behind the lens of Americana period pieces like Rockateer or Captain. Gray and Nolfi don’t excite me too much as contenders. So if the Bros Russo are the only alternative, I’m for it.

Yeah, because You, Me & Dupree and Community are better and more exciting than anything that Gray and Nolfi have done. [/sarcasm]

So Tim’s logic is “I’d rather take a risk on something really weird and goofy than go with either of two directors who have proven themselves capable of directing solid action flicks.”
I can’t agree with this, given that Captain America 2 will undoubtedly be… an action flick. So… yeah. Gray or Nolfi, please.
Because Be Cool and Adjustment Bureau were SOLID action flicks. Please.
Really would rather have Johnston back rather than any of those choices. Don’t see why they couldn’t have part of the new movie take place in WWII, like a father/son, then/now Baron Zemo story.

The Italian Job was the very definition of mediocre, but The Negotiator was damn good. I hope Gray gets the film.
Whatever happened to Kerry Conran, the director of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow? It’s like he fell off the face of the Earth. I always thought he would be more active, and I enjoyed the heck out of that movie. Anyways, none of these intrigue me, I guess if I were to choose, I’d rather F Gary Gray, he has chops.
Honey I Shrunk the Kids was Johnston. He can handle modern day fine. In fact he may be a better choice simply because he’d be bringing that empathy for “Classic Americana” that Cap would be carrying around with him as a character out of his time.
That’s a great point, actually. Hopefully it’s Johnston’s schedule that’s keeping him out of the running and not just Marvel being dicks.
I think that Cap 2 could really use some Winter Soldier. It’d be a nice return to the places and events of the first film after having Cap adjust to the modern world in Avengers. It could still feature some Golden and Silver Age goodness in the form of flashbacks to the continuing adventures of Bucky Barnes, and how he figured into history in Cap’s absence. Maybe Hawkeye or Black Widow could tag along. I hope that Avengers ends with at least a hint of an idea of where the solo sequels are headed.

The Adjustment Bureau did indeed contain some solid, enjoyable action stuff.
I have nothing nice to say about Be Cool, but that’s beside the point.
Conran was attached to a lot of projects that never went anywhere, it seems. It’s a pity; though the movie had some flaws, the dude showed real talent.
