Since the news was broken earlier this week that Gary Ross will not be directing the Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire, they’ve quickly spun together a shortlist of directors that they want to do the film, and one of them is David Cronenberg.
This has to be very wishful thinking on their part, but Cronenberg has surprised us before (who’d have thought he would have gone from being the king of body horror to bringing us stark and brilliant dramas that feature Viggo?), so it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility that he might at least consider a very commercial property that is a sure thing to be successful.
Then he could have enough pull to dust off that Fly sequel script that some of us want him to do. Hopefully also starring Viggo.

This will never happen. A History of Violence and Eastern Promises were Cronenberg’s idea of “commercial, mainstream entertainment” There’s no way he’d sign on to a tween sequel. He doesn’t need it.
Yeah, it’s mostly just interesting that his name of all names would pop up on a shortlist. It’s like them wanting Stallone to direct it because The Expendables was a huge hit.

It’s said that the C man was offered Return of the Jedi and Total Recall, right? Yeah, I agree it’s doubtful but I would love for him to do it. Love to see his take on the material, and imagine the projects he could get green-lit coming off a monster blockbuster like this? We’d be up to our ears in awesome Cronenberg psycho-drama and maybe even some sci-fi for decades.
He had started prep work on Total Recall and the whole thing of mutants on Mars, and even the character of Kuato originated from him.
It’s really one of those “What if he really did direct it?” ideas that some of us wish happened, but I’m more than happy with the final result which is my favorite Arnold film.
It might not, but keep in mind that Cronenberg has been adamant about trying to do mainstream stuff for a while now. He’s said at several horror convention appearances that its hard to sell out to hollywood because he’s known as “that weird guy”.
Yeah Cronen’s IMDB page is full of those. I really would like for him to do this as well, both for his career and to get a DP who will hold the camera steady during action.
Are you serious? You think that today’s David Cronenberg would deliver something mainstream enough that it would satisfy the 12-year-olds and their hipster parents that put the Hunger Games through the roof? Come on. Cronenberg would deliver a film that most HG fans would loathe but critics and non-HG nerds would like, and the result would be that Cronenberg would be back in the woods again. At best it’s shades of HP3. At worst it’s David Lynch’s Dune (a film I enjoy, but no one else does). Either way it’s not going to equal David Cronenberg getting anything he wants greenlit. It’s David Cronenberg circa 2002 digging the change out of his friend’s sofas to get a movie made.
Anyway, it’s never going to happen.
Haha funny that you invoke David Lynch’s Dune. I’m just saying I wouldn’t mind seeing the man cash a fat check from a studio project. And he would be able to do whatever he wants afterwards.
Yeah, I could see him handling it fine. There’s no proof in his history that he somehow wouldn’t understand the tone of the material he was dealing with.
