One film I’ve been looking forward to is the remake of Maniac. I’m a huge fan of the original, and I always like it when a remake keeps at least a bit of the plot, and even characters. Alexandre Aja (producing this) did that with his Hills Have Eyes remake (which this writer happens to find to be even better than the original, which is still decent in it’s own right), and he’s doing it here as well. Elijah Wood is no Joe Spinell (no one will ever be able to compare to him, except maybe Tom Sizemore who seemed to be channeling him in the vastly underrated Bringing Out The Dead.), but I like him, and I can’t wait to see how he plays Frank Zito.
3 stills have surfaced, along with a plot synopsis that makes me groan (searching on the internet for women? Really? What happened to simple stalking during the night?), as well as intrigue (mostly the stuff that seems to be the same, but will surely have a nice twist. I like the addition of him working in a Mannequin store) me.
Here’s the synopsis followed by the stills.
“Wood plays the role of a serial killer who works at a shop that sells antique mannequins. He finds victims on the Internet and stalks them like prey, all the while suffering from hallucinations that throw him back into the past, when he was abused by his own mother. In his twisted mind, he gains a measure of revenge against his mother with each kill.”

Finally watched the original of this on Netflix Instnatview. OMG. What a pile of crazy. Totally engaging, frequently terrible, i.e. Joe Spinelli when he is supposed to be ‘sexy’, ending makes no sense, &tc. Glad to see they are using the mannequin theme. But always with the Freudian origin now (Willy Wonka, Halloween, Grinch)?
I watched this on Netflix when this story first broke a few months ago and might I say that scene where the guys head is totally blown off and they showed it was awesome. I saw aspecial on that said the contents of the head was the afternoon lunch leftovers of the studio that afternoon. I hope the remake has the same iconic scene.
I’m hoping for Wood to be “Going To The Showdown” as well as the iconic “bathroom stalk” sequence that Aja ripped off for High Tension.
the HHE remake better than the original? Oh, stop it. I can’t take this much laughter this early in the day.
Ahh man I thought Aja was remaking the one about the killer in the woods. You know the one if you even just whisper his name, BAM hes shows up. That one was awesome and scary for the time. Wish i knew the title, but kinda let down this is the remake happening.
I remember on a podcast they mentioned that this was entirely first-person, guess they nixed that?
Madman? (1982)
