The Maniac remake is something I’ve covered on here in the past, and it’s no secret that I’m a big fan of the original. However, despite some having a predisposition to hating on remakes, I’m actually 100% behind this particular one, just from the fact that Aja has his hands in this film, and he’s a known fan, given that he flat out homaged the bathroom stalk sequence in High Tension.
Renn brought us the Cannes teaser trailer, and now there’s a full trailer out there. It requires age verification, but it’s worth it.
It’s got a lot more in it, and it has a few scenes that people who have seen the original will recognize. Do I care that it’s redoing a lot of the original? Not at all. Aja did that for the most part with The Hills Have Eyes, and then he went and did his own thing with the latter half of the film. It seems with this one he’s sprinkling his and Gregory Levasseur’s take throughout this remake. Either way I’m looking forward to this film.

I still can’t get over how a drive-in flick of the ’80’s, almost unanimously dismissed by the critics as vile trash upon its release, is now receiving a respectable do-over starring a guy from some of the highest grossing movies ever (i.e. LORD OF THE RINGS). It’s curious how times change.
I love the art-house feel of this thing. Maniac could’ve easily been remade as a cheap, lame, lifeless thing like the Nightmare on Elm Street remake, but instead it looks like the people making the movie actually GIVE A SHIT about what they’re doing.
