I finally got around to seeing E.T. a few years ago, a friend loaned me his 20th Anniversary Edition. I loved every minute of Spielberg’s majestic opus of a friendship conquering the greatest cultural divide man has ever known. But now word comes that Amblin and Universal, along with Spielberg, cannot leave well enough alone. As you can see in this trailer I’ve embedded below, the walkie talkies have been replaced with GUNS.
I’m sorry, but this is fucking bullshit. Whatever happened to leaving an accomplished work alone? It’s not like Leonardo DiCaprio needed to go back and add shotguns to his “Mona Lisa” to make it edgier. I won’t stand for this. Who’s joining me in a petition to keep Spielberg’s original walkie-talkie intended work intact? We mustn’t rest until the true masterpiece is restored to its original form!

Ha!
Hopefully this is Spielberg’s way of finally splitting from this Lucasian tendency to CGI sanitize his earlier films.
I think you mean Leonardo da Vinci.
The actor?
Um… The guns WERE in the original movie. Spielberg had them edited out for the 2002 re-release because he didn’t want the guns to scare kids. Now, most likely because of the outcry via all the Star Wars films, he’s putting the guns back in. Do some research before you rant about something….
Aww. You’re precious.
I’m just glad we’ll FINALLY be able to see his original vision realized……
Don’t know if that’s sarcasm or not.
Anyways: Here’s proof.

Damn… You got me on this one! haha
It is good that first Lucas and now spielberg can do this…
The article and the comments are priceless. Keep up the good work Mr. Kelly!
Rumor has it Spielberg will be adding the child/alien orgy scene that was left on the cutting room floor. It was deemed too excessive in ’82, but he feels it’s time for his true vision to be seen.
No doubt Spielberg’s belief was reinforced by the beautifully honest way Matt Stone and Trey Parker used puppets to portray the art of love making in the director’s cut of Team America.
I hear in the orgy scene, Elliot shoots first………
Sarcasm aside, this is good news. All we ever wanted was the original versions available ALSO. That goes for any movie or series of movies. Nice to see Spielberg isn’t an irredeemable lunatic like a friend of his.
Please tell me that this was a joke… The guns WERE the original version, the walkie-talkies were added for the 20th Anniversary and that change was hated by most fans of the film. So Universal is doing EXACTLY what you want them to do, Tim. They are perserving the “accomplished work” by restoring it to the 1982 version and losing the 2002 subpar version. I mean when you were leant the DVD by your friend did you fail to notice that the disc had TWO cuts of the film? At least Spielberg is giving fans what they want, the original we fell in love with, that’s something that George Lucas could learn from.
Wow.
Some folks are unable to detect sarcasm without emoticons and (lolz).
I’m just waiting for the day that all guns in films already made are replaced with walkie talkies. Saving Private Ryan’s gonna be so damn weird when that happens.
…and then William H Macy blew his brains out with a walkie talkie.
😛
So cunty…
John Woo films became pure Looney Tunes highjinks when the guns were all replaced with walkie talkies. And the blood replaced with purple paint.
Or did Woo’s films become Looney Tunes already about ten or twelve years ago, with Cruise’s slow motion hair and the majority of Paycheck?? Mexican stand-off!!! Point your two walkie talkies at each other!! And screaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaam and see who becomes a sissy first!!
Is that before or after Drew Barrymore snorts coke off of his chest?
