While Elba spends most of his time in his current scifi film in street clothes, it looks like hell have the chance to get suited up and dive into the thick of it in Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim.
We still haven’t seen much from Del Toro’s giant-monsters and robots film, but we do have a pretty legit synopsis now, and if Ridley Scott’s Prometheus has rendered Del Toro’s Mountains of Madness film moot, well then it sure sounds like Del Toro has made any attempt at a Neon Genesis: Evangelion equally unnecessary.
“When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.”
Hopefully this is a sign of more images to come, and hopefully even a trailer soon! I’m very excited to see what Del Toro has been cooking up as he ended up “building several blocks of Hong Kong” in Canada and then “literally demolished them.”

Will the Jaeger’s drop bombs and thus be part of a horrid marketing campaign? One can hope not.
Wow…that’s very pastiche-y…sans satire.
When I was a kid, I thought that in the future, everyone would be dressed like Mr. Elba is in that still. Instead, we have skinny jeans. Real life sucks.
That was fucking hilarious.
And this movie sounds pretty badass. Totally digging the Crysis nano-suit sans helmet.
Looks like Pacific Rim will be Evangelion, in the same way that Chronicle was Akira.
I’m disappointed to learn that Idris is Sharing the lead with one of the guys from Sons Of Anarchy. I’ve never seen the show, and don’t mean to shit on it, or its actor, but c’mon! He gets top billing over Idris Elba? When is this man going to get the starring vehicle he so rightly deserves, that’s not a fucking Tyler Perry movie.
For the record, I *loved* Robot Jox.
Charlie Hunnam is great. Even better would be if Del Toro let them use their British accents.
