At this point, I feel like I’ve already seen Ghostbusters 3, we’ve been talking about it long enough.
Bill Murray was on Letterman last week to discuss his role in Moonrise Kingdom when the conversation transitioned into the man’s greater body of work. It’s actually a very charming look back on Murray’s career, which is why I’ve included the video below. Naturally the conversation gravitated towards Ghostbusters, and of course that ever-elusive third entry was brought up:
“That’s about all they [wanted] to know at Cannes, too. They just don’t have a really good script. It’s hard. You know, even the second Ghostbusters wasn’t as much fun for me as the first one. It’s hard to make a sequel. It’s gotta be really funny. That first one was so darn funny. It’s hard for me. I think we’ll try again, I always drag my feet on it.”
How refreshing is it to hear an actor talk honestly about this franchise? Murray’s referring to the draft by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg (writers on the US version of The Office). If they must make this film, at least someone is there to tighten the vice when they can sense it’s not working. No offense to Dan Aykroyd, but I feel like the only involved party who can look at this objectively is Peter Venkman.

I’ve been trying to think of an angle on this that would work. Grumpy Old Ghostbusters? Or maybe a Wild Bunch style “one last hurrah”? Maybe one of the main characters has died and is now a ghost and needs help? Yeah, start off at the funeral with all these old guys. I’m just brainstorming here, but these are all free. What we don’t need is a boring “passing of the torch” or franchise reboot. End the saga and don’t look to make more sequels. I’m with Bill Murray though that this movie has to have a reason to exist or else it shouldn’t.
I think the best model a third GHOSTBUSTERS could use is ROCKY BALBOA. Stallone didn’t try to sweep the fact Rocky was old under a carpet; the whole movie revolved around the idea that Rocky was getting old, which was probably the first and best way of going about it. The trick here is not dwell on it too heavily (to do so would risk depressing the crap out of the audience).
Here’s an idea: What if the third film is about the “passing of the torch” going wrong? A new team of younger Ghostbusters has been put together by the old guard between movies, but they’re turning out to be a total sham. When one particular ghostbusting operation goes disastrously awry, the classic guys are forced to reassemble to combat whatever supernatural threat is facing New York and the world this time.
Hey that’s not a bad idea. A completely out of left field scene where ALL the “new” Ghostbusters are unceremoniously slaughtered would be hilarious. Also, YES @ playing off their ages. I felt like that’s where Schwarzenegger was beginning to go wrong with his last few films before he became governor…and what he’s beginning to realize now. USE your age, man! You just look silly if you don’t. And I have no idea how he’s going to be a Terminator again, if that is actually going to happen. How the fuck are they going to explain AGED T-800s? Anyway. Yes. I like your idea and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
I think Mr. Murray should give you a call. I would love to see a false start to the movie, with the new team of Ghostbusters (extended cameos by actors currently popular with the teeny boppers – Pattinson, Hemsworth, Tatum, Radcliffe, and a rapper, maybe?) biting it during their reality show. Bam – old guard to the rescue, perhaps climaxing with a battle versus phantasmagorical versions of the younger team.
That sounds too much like Rocky V.

You took the words right out of my mind.
I was actually thinking more along the lines of the first half hour of the Mission: Impossible movie, where the whole team except Tom Cruise gets wiped out.
The dead Bill Murray as a ghost has been an idea before. I remember a story awhile back that said the only way he would agree to appear in a third movie is if his character were killed off and he came back as a ghost. Of course, I have no idea whether that’s actually an element to whatever story they’re working on now.
I’m kinda partial to BermudaMan’s idea below. I like the torch-passing-gone-wrong concept. Have the newbies cross the streams and get eradicated or something fun like that. Then the old-farts have to come in and save NYC one more time.
