Last week I brought you the news that Samuel L. had been cast in the Robocop remake. Now the cast has gotten a bit bigger with Hugh Laurie signing on as a “cold, sarcastic CEO of Omnicorp.”
So basically, unless they change the name, he’s playing Dick Jones. Pretty cool that he’s playing the “suit antagonist”, and I hope there’s still going to be a “street thug antagonist.” I mean, they could always go with my choice from the Recast thread on the boards and cast Michael C. Hall as Clarence Boddicker.
So yeah, the cast continues to get larger with more interesting gents and ladies, and it continues to pique my curiosity.

Actually, he’d make a great Ronny Cox’s Dick Jones.
This is shaping up to be either very interesting, or an embarrassment on a lot of resumes.
I feel like I woke up in a parallel universe. Hugh Laurie as Dick Jones in RoboCop? Hugh Laurie from ‘A Bit of Fry and Laurie’? Hugh Laurie from ‘Blackadder the Third’? I think it’s great casting, but coming from the UK, Laurie was only known for light weight comedic roles (normally as a foil to Stephen Fry) before the House thing happened. Just really weird…
Yeah, he’ll always be dear old Bertie Wooster to me so I find the events of the last 8 years to be utterly bizarre.
And his House voice has always been just similar enough to the over-the-top-fakey American accent he’d do sometimes on A Bit of Fry and Laurie to weird me out a little.
Robo-casting here, robo-casting there, people robo-casting like they just don’t care…….(actually, based on the cast, it looks like they do care).
The original is such a great film, it’s untouchable. I know some people are bitching about this, but why not give it a shot? They already butchered the franchise with Robocop 3, where if I recall correctly, the enemy morphed from ED-209 to the terror of scarce low-income housing…..oh, and Robocop had a jetpack.
Thank you for recognizing the the franchise DIDN’T in fact die with the 2nd one. I think Robocop 2 is criminally underrated. You may not feel the same way but at least you realize that it officially sunk on the third effort..
Laurie as Dick Jones is too much awesome, but Dexter as Boddicker? Meh, I’d rather Sam Rockwell or Cranston as everyone’s favorite spiteful slumlord.
I actually thought the 2nd film was okay. The elementary school kid as a gangster angle was a little annoying, and quite honestly I was expecting something more out of a Frank Miller story, but parts of the film are actually decent. Both the ending battle and the Robocop 2 attack in the warehouse work fairly well.
The whole Nuke plot makes the film drag – everybody is just filling time until the end fight. And, while it’s competently directed by Kersner, the attempt to emulate Verhoeven’s tone from the first film fall flat. It’s huge drop-off in quality from the first film, but it’s kind of a “Wrath of Khan” to “Star Trek: the Motion Picture” drop off.
