While the weekend has certainly ended with some tragic news, there’s no reason for us not to look at the bright side of this new week, and we can do so by diving into the dark realm…

You see, today marks the 122nd birthday of the master of Old Gods, weird fiction, cosmic horror, and the man whose work has provided the cornerstone for nearly a century of literary and cinematic art exploring the dark forces of evil in our universe.

Howard Phillips Lovecraft developed a canon of stories that ostensibly wrote the DNA for psychological horror in fiction that still resonates to this day. While there are few outright adaptations of his work, artists in all walks have been inspired by him and some greats like Stephen King and Guillermo Del Toro have done their best work when riding the Lovecraft wavelength. As recently as this past summer we’ve seen Prometheus — a tentpole 3D blockbuster horror film — tackle similar themes and environments as were dreamed up by Lovecraft so many decades ago.

So, to celebrate this man’s birth on August 20th of 1890 and his good works that followed, I thought it would be fun to take a look at some sweet tributes to the man in the form of Lovecraft-inspired cakes. As I started gathering images I was bummed to see that the Lovecraftsman had already done a nice rundown of such creations, but turns out there’s no lack of Cthulhu-inspired cake masters out there, and plenty of new examples made it worth it to dive into the world of literary food homage again.

First up, check out this awesome Lovecraft Cake and monster cupcakes by Cake Amsterdam

Then take a look at this wicked vision of a… portly Old God from E.T. The name on the cake is pure coincidence, but I’m sure CHUD’s own Nunz would appreciate such a confection…

Um, here’s some weird crossover cake-making that I don’t quite get, but still appreciate (Mike’s Amazing Cakes)…

Of course, Cthulhu Cupcakes (via Cupcakestakethecake)

 And Cthulhu cookies (via Ucenide)…

And now here’s a bunch of other cool cakes from around the tubes that you might have seen elsewhere. Enjoy Lovecraft Day!
