Holy shit, CGI has changed the way we look at the world around us. Back in the 70’s if you were waiting for the movie to start and the bucket of popcorn grew eyes and started dancing around the counter top assisted by a reanimated bag of Skittles you’d puke in your hat and call a ventriloquist, a priest, and a burly cop six weeks from retirement to come deal with it. Now we can’t flip through the channels without seeing a seemingly living 2,000 foot robot whipping up a lather in his 17,000 foot shower or a muffin writhing out of some bitch’s grasp as she does a walk-and-talk about menopause being a real pisser. Superman made us believe a man could fly but it wasn’t until The Revenge of the Sith that we could believe that Christopher Lee had both Jedi Powers and Phase-Shift Parkinsons.
CGI is an amazing tool that many filmmakers wield like a digital Mjolnir, creating worlds and creatures that take our breath away. Unfortunately through the years some have used it as a scythe, slashing our dreams and severing that muscle that connects our sexual pleasure organs to the muscle that tells our mind we’re really good at using our sexual pleasure organs. The result is oblivion.
So with that we bring you CHUD’s latest glorious list. The twenty worst instances of CGI in movie history. In no order. Well, except the order we decide to do them.
Brought to you by Nick Nunziata
THE OFFENDER: The Mummy Returns (2001)

THE SCENE: The Scorpion King returns from his slumber and makes battle with our heroes and Imhotep (the legendary Arnold Vosloo, who when he comes back… is going to cut a steak), which is fine except he’s a digital The Rock with a scorpion’s body battling in slow-mo and close-up. Look at that snarl up above. Not even The Rock’s mother could tell the difference between her son and the 1991 Phillips CD+I graphic above… until she flew out of her Dad’s dick and grew sentience.
Mr. The Rock is The Scorpion King so of course he’s half man and half scorpion. Of course the scorpion half is 1,400 times the size of a normal scorpion. Imagine if centaurs had to deal with the same logic. Of course director Stephen Sommers used exactly zero pieces of actual The Rock meat to create this supposedly real creature meant to interact with his cast.
WHERE IT ALL GOES WRONG: Moment one. I’m at times a very staunch Stephen Sommers defender, but use of CGI is not his strong suit on his best day. This is his worst day. The character looks like he’s about forty stages from the “approved” phase with features and facial animations that Andrea Bocelli can spot the ineffectiveness of. It’s made worse by the fact that the film begins with an action sequence with the real The Rock. It’d be one thing if the early version of the character eats a shitty grape and gets so sick he pukes up one of his dimensions. Then we could believe that this infirm 1-D villain looks the way he does.
The comparison between the man The Rock and the digital The Rock is ridiculous. And not in a good Bud Dwyer is shooting his face on live TV kinda way.
This horrible climactic bit of CGI is worsened by the fact the entire scene takes place amidst tons of different lighting effects [chiefly, FLAME, which as many of you know flickers and constantly affects what our eyes yell at our brain to understand] and that it requires this ‘being’ to interact with a bunch of living breathing human beings as well as John Hannah. What we’re left with is absolutely hollow semi-entertainment, and the fact this moment makes the cut for our list and not the horrible zombie monkeys or thousands of running Anubis assholes whose feet never seem to actually be touching the ground tells you that The Mummy Returns is to bad CGI as the rainforest is to plant life. Though there are many asshole scenes in this movie, the FakeRock takes the cake. And then speedfucks the cake.
HOW IT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE PRACTICALLY: There’s this guy who looks just like the CGI Rock, only less pixelated. Almost like a skin The Rock, one who can emote [sorta] without having to involve a handful of guys with way too many Neon Evangelion toys and their Maya desktops. This majestic living The Rock person could play the scenes and then have the magic of greenscreen, wire work, prosthetics, and CGI [for the easier to fake aspects] create movie magic that speaks to the many films of yore which totally influenced the Mummy movies without making a list like this one.
In reality it’s all about time. They had to rush this movie out to make the Summer release date. I think everyone was hoping to get the movie out before the general public figured out they were flocking to a movie sequel starring With Honors Guy.
It could have been worse. They could have used Sommers’ first approved CGI pass:

HOW BAD IS IT? Instead of 1’s and 0’s, the binary code they used is 3’s and one of the Joust buzzard’s toenails.
IN SUMMATION: This is one whirling bitch bastard of a mistake of a CGI movie creation and one of the big chinks in the armor of a once-proud tradition of gorgeous and visually convincing summer spectacles.
This came in 2001 and was almost the worst thing to happen that year.
Take a look at this abomination in all its glory:

Great first installment! I immediately thought of this film when I saw the name of the article, as the "Rock Lobster" from Mummy Returns not only aged horribly, but never looked good to begin with, and it should be the first thing that ANYONE thinks of when bad CGI is brought up. Is this list going to focus primarily on CG-heavy films, or is anything fair game?
Even despite the terrible CGI, I find that scene incredibly entertaining. Vosloo seemed upset at the end there.
I'm all for bashing, and I agree with the actual points made in the article, but the level of hyperbole on display in this one was just too much. Andrea Bocelli? Really? Why not save yourself the trouble and stick with Stevie Wonder. The joke is just as boring either way.
LOL
As bad as that CG-abomination is, I do not think it was the worse effect in The Mummy Returns. I think that dishonor goes to that spinning vaccum pyramid cartoon at the end. It made me mouth "Oh, fuck you" at the screen.
This entire film is a CGI crime. But what tops even The Scorpion Rock would be Vosloo sinking in CG goo right at the end. Ugh.
YES! Another CHUD list! Life begins anew.
Can't wait for Deep Blue Sea and
Die Another Day
I really don't have a problem with the wide shots of the Scorpion King– there's a rubbery quality that seems intentionally Harryhausen-by-way-of-CGI. <br><br>
The closeups, on the other hand– no reason at all why they could not have been a live action/practical/CGI composite…
Defend Stephen Sommers? Why? He sucks. Are you going to not approve this comment because you defend Stephen Sommers? Does defending Stephen Sommers involve catching the Spear of Osiris when I throw it at him?
It *was* going to be done practically, but someone screwed up and there were some scheduling conflicts, and The Rock wasn't available to do the thing. So they had to cook up the scene in the last minute in CGI.
Way to rip off Denofgeek.com. Nice article
Sorry but this is kinda pointless, don't you think? It's kinda like bitching about bad matte paintings or motion control effects. It all depends on the money and resources available to the movie makers. Of course the CGI in The Mummy Returns was crap but Sommers doesn't seem to care about that sort of thing. James Cameron he ain't.
I think the perameters of your list should be based on the budget of the film. The Mummy Returns deserves score because of that stupid Scorpion King atrocity. Another example would be that annoying monkey thing they had in Lost In Space. Or pretty much EVERYTHING in the Lawnmower Man. But then the Lawnmower Man was made in 92 so where do you draw the line? Christ, if you really want to be a cunt you could trash The Last Starfighter.
What is your criteria for this list?
How many of Sony Pictures Imageworks masterpieces are we going to see in this list.
How are you guys going to top this?
Hear hear, and good call on this series, Nick. Even as nearly as bad prosthetics beat the hell out of bad CG any day.
Philips CD-I? I was thinking Sega CD but you get the win, Nick. Hands down. Very nice start to a new series.
Cool idea for a list. I nominate Ron Silver's blobby death in Timecop.
Not a bad article, just … something seems off.
I liked the CG zombie monkeys.
That stuff was entertaining, and that's what it's all about anyway.
Empire Magazine did an interview with the guys at ILM (I think), asking them about the craptastic effects. The VFX superivsor on the movie said, everyone involved was very aware of the shoddy effects. But the studio rushed the movie and didn't give ILM enough time to finesse the effects, so basically they had to ship half-finished scenes. So the reason for the craptastic CGI is not (merely) incompetence, but just lack of time.
Why not do the "best" list? Kind of agree with CreepyThinMan. I'd think directors would want to have the best looking shit they can, but the money and technology isn't there. Finding bad fx is like shooting fish in a barrel. Giving Anaconda 2 shit for bad cg ? – well no wonder, they had no budget.
How about a list of "most believable FX in cinema?"
Good idea for a list, but I can't agree with this choice. Sorry, too much exaggeration, too much hyperbole, and when you watch the sequence in the embedded video, it's clear that it's simply not that bad at all.
You want to get real with this list, you need to look at Mortal Kombat: Annilhilation (especially the little "dragon tattoos"), or the bronto chase sequence from the King Kong remake. There's no way Mummy Returns can stand up to those.
If not for the lame humor attempts (seriously, a Budd Dwyer joke?) this was a neat article.
Wow, everything in that entire scene was horrible, CGI or not. The funniest part is after he's stabbed and Vasloo runs up and poses.
I hope you dont forget that plane crashing at the end of Air Force One. It fucking rules.
haha, looking forward to see magic moments in the history of cgi, like james bond in his kitesurfing experience from d.a.d.
PLEASE! Please include Deep Blue Sea. the scene where Samuel Jackson gets chomped. They momentarily make him into a CGI white man! Watch it again!
Everything should be judged against Jurassic Park, which was made in '93. Even today, the effects in Jurassic Park make most of the shit pumped out by studios look elementary by comparison.
A Sound of Thunder had the worst CGI hands down. I forget the whole sorry but it had something to do with bankruptcy and unfinished effects.
is there supposed to be a video at the bottom — I can't see it .. anyway, looking forward to the next entries 😉
"And not in a good Bud Dwyer is shooting his face on live TV kinda way."
That just doesn't work. Holy shit, it's like you have pop culture reference tourette's. There's nothing worse than someone trying to write funny who can't.
Man I can't wait to get to 'The Relic' and An American Werewolf in Paris… Though I have to also wonder how far back you are going and whether you're going to do comparison shots from more successful movies' fx done at that time or not. It's easy to bash an older movie made when CGI was still growing, it'd sit with a bit more validity if you sat it next to something built in a similar time, similar conceptual complexity, and better execution. I agree the Rock Lobster was lacking, but for the time, money and effort, I doubt a green screen with cgi would have been much better.
This sort of feature works best if you do it all in one go. There's nothing here that couldn't be said faster and funnier in a single paragraph and there's no benefit to the reader in spreading it out over days, especially since so many CHUD features end up taking months just to reach ten entries.
@#13: The criteria, as Nick seems to lay out, is a use of CGI so bad it kills your good will towards the movie. The Mummy's Return has a lot of bad CG use but as another poster says, many of us upon reading the title of this article, immediately thought of The Scorpion King. Considering this criteria, what's your pick? Thinking about Avatar, while the mass forest vistas already show signs of distracting fake-ness, I'm starting to wonder if that "twitchy face" thing might not be a problem in the future as they learn to tone it down in later productions. But these issues aren't "deal breakers" during initial release. We were all shocked at the shite-ness of the Scorpion King. Yes, very likely it was a last-minute fix, but that goes for many bad script decisions and poor performances etc etc. If we give one movie a pass for production problems causing shite-ness, then we may as well give all movies a pass and shut down the internet – or indulge in Knowles-esque circle jerks over every bit of lameness that comes down the pipes.
Hahaha. I've never seen Mummy Returns. But now I kinda regret it.
You would have to include 'A Sound Of Thunder' in there. I couldn't believe my eyes watching Ed Burns walking down a street that looked like Bladerunner made out of cartoon lego!
It may not be as high-profile as the "Mummy" films, but "A Sound of Thunder" had some of the worst CGI in recent memory. And are we just looking at theatrical releases here, or do SciFi channel (I refuse to say SyFy) original movies count?
#29 – it really is remarkable that almost twenty years later, the effects from that movie are a gold standard of realistic and effective CGI.
This is a great idea for a column. The title of it alone made me laugh. Looking forward to the rest.
That is some thespianship at 1:48
Some shot of the Alien in Alien 3 are atrocious. I mean what was the point? They had a guy in an alien costume there, why use that crappy CG blobby thing?
Completely agree with #3. I love Nick's articles but this looks like he had a huge list of bad jokes he could never use and put them all in a list that didn't need anything more than a brief description and the video clip.
SPAWN definitely deserves a write-up.
Yes, 1:48 truly is something special.
Great idea for a list. Is this just CGI characters/creatures, or CGI in general, like scenery (CRYSTAL SKULL) and stuff? Anyways, looking forward to more entries.
Great read; I am looking forward to seeing what else you put on this list. Maybe, the movie version of The Scorpian King? I made the mistake of seeing it in theaters, but I was young and naive; didn't know any better.
What I hate most about Sommers is when you watch his movies you can tell the whole time he's practically begging the audience: "Isn't this FUN? Look at the action, and the comedy! Looks how FUN it all is! Just…so much darn FUN!"
This series is going to be sorely lacking until we get to a LOTR Weta effect. I would also nominate any creature riding sequence in a SW prequel. They just never figured that effect out.
i would have to say the most recent worse simplest bit of cgi was Johnny Depps face in Public Enemies. wtf was up with that? Depp couldnt jump over a counter top and they used a stunt guy and couldnt even cover up his face correctly?!
Wolverine's claws in the bathroom scene of X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE were a whole new level of awful.
I nominate District 9.
i think the first harry potter movie has some horrendous CGI. just saying….
@#48 … yeah, it really sucks that the man wants you to have fun, doesn't it? I found most of his movies fun, sorry you didn't.
I'd nominate Blade 2 for this list. I love Guillermo del Toro almost as much as his mother does, but the scene with the CGI fight in front of the flood lights almost killed that movie for me.
As much as it pains me to say it, the tentacles in The Mist were pretty weak.
RESIDENT EVIL. The "licker" creature. Funniest moment? The heroes see it on camera and it looks into the camera, licking its chops after feasting on someone, and a guy says "What.. The Fuck.. Is that?" That my friend, is bad CGI.
Mission to Mars. Troy. Underworld. Van Helsing. So many to choose from…
freddy vs jason.. star wars prequels.. spawn devil character.. 97% of CGI mixed with real world environments.. i'd like to see the 20 BEST CGI moments list myself.. but this will be hilarious regardless of the low level of difficultly..
You guys should do list comedy like Cracked.com. Ie, just do a 5-to-10 point article and get it over with.
Otherwise it's just another Chud.Com "feature" that never goes past a few entries before you guys forget about it and launch another one prematurely.
In fact, since Devin got meta with his '20 000 Leagues' article, how about you guys do a feature about 'The Top 10 ill-conceived-but-still-launched-and-prematurely-abandoned Chud Articles'
This guy's doesn't know what he's talking about. That was a pretty good effect. Sure, they could have stiched the Rock's face on to the scorpion instead of creating an all CGI creature with his likeness, but considering the way it was done, I don't think that would have looked as good. They would have had to film the Rock doing those scenes to get his head to match the movements and I don't think he could have moved his arms around realistically to match the claw movements. The army of the dead was an awesome scene that mached that of "Star Wars" or "Apocalypse Now". It is obvious that the author of this article is just not a fan of CGI.
The best part of the Mummy movies was Rachel Weisz, nom nom nom….
All of the CGI in The Mummy Returns looks shoddy and just unfinished. One of the worst movie going experiences that I've had to suffer through to date. I swear that it just looks like they didn't have the time to actually complete all of the effects work and just released an incomplete film.
Excellent!! Well worthy of a thread –
So what will we see? CG Jabba by the look of it (the first version was ultra shit, the second version just shit), Die Another Day's CG tidal wave, Poseidon, oh yes and when Gary Oldman whinces as his CG plane hits a CG ocean.
Oh wow. Yes! I remember being so disappointed seeing this. I remember this being one of those times I thought I could have done better, with my Evangelion toys and Maya desktop. Hell, a couple years before I goofed around in Maya on my high school's old desktop setup and I think I rendered a creature with better lighting and blended it with a photo. Okay it was a still, but I was a kid dicking around during a free period in the art department . These people got paid to make something this bad.
