Just when I was wondering “Hey, why hasn’t the rumor mill been churning on Iron Man 3…?”, we get our first contender.
And what a contender. The contender. The only name that should be mentioned for this gig: Shane Black.
According to THR’s Heat Vision, Black has met with Marvel and pitched them his idea. He’s being considered, but it’s not a sure thing. There are other contenders. Whoever they are, they aren’t Black, so we don’t even need to give them a thought.
I’d like to think Robert Downey Jr. will weigh in here, and cast a deciding vote. As far as I know, they worked quite well together on Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Downey is a loyal guy. He likes to keep familiar faces around him.
Even if they pick a lesser man, Black is still working on an adaptation of Death Note, and is still the man who would give life to Doc Savage. So we have more Black to look forward to … but man, I want to see him paired up with Tony Stark. It would be so, so perfect.

Once you go Black…
Elisabeth Rappe, I hope that Shane Black directs, so that Iron Man and War Machine final become the…Lethal Weapons they should have been from the first Iron Man film. Shane Black would be a…Perfect fit for Iron Man 3.
I dunno IM3 (or any movie after Avengers) is gonna be hella difficult. The audience will always be asking the question – Why the hell don’t they simply call the rest of the Avengers to help out?
The easy answer is that you give a throwaway line that has the rest of the team engaged in something else somewhere else. Or you toss in a cameo to show that they’re dealing with one aspect of the problem while Tony fights the “main” villain. Or whatever…
The less easy (but very character-appropriate) answer is that Tony Stark is just his usual proud, stubborn self and refuses to call them in on something that’s “his” problem. Could even have Pepper or Fury call him out on it.
Either way I don’t think it’s that difficult. I do think you need to acknowledge the existence of the Avengers in some way, but keeping them from anything other than maybe a cameo appearance isn’t all -that- difficult.
um, maybe the film “the Avengers” will address that? Why don’t we just wait and see
This needs to happen. Seriously a perfect fit. Always bet on Black. Too cheesey? Ehh..whatever. Maybe then we get Val Kilmer on board too.
Exactly. All of the Avengers have their individual solo series where they handle things alone. It’s sort of implied (and can easily be in the film) that the Avengers assemble only for world-threatening problems, not Wolverine’s* throwdown with a thug or Tony’s missing technology.
*I know he’s not a movie Avenger, or a classic one, he’s just a good example of a present day Avenger who works perfectly fine alone.
