WILL THE NEW KINDLE FIRE TABLET AFFECT HOW YOU WATCH MOVIES?

Kindle gets aggressive in the tablet market right as the streaming world gets more tumultuous.

That actually sounds like a good christmas present. Great price. Now I can watch Rollercoaster (1977) on a roller coaster.

200 bucks is such a holiday impulse buy.  And 100 for the new Kindle?  Thanks, Amazon!  I just bought birthday presents for my girlfriend and myself!

I have serious doubts about the appeal of a 7 inch tablet. A tablet computer with a screen less than 9.7 inches is just a glorified over sized smart phone, or iPod, only without the APPLE cool or world of tech integration. No one would want to use this for the kind of heavy computing one can get into with an iPad. It's a media platform only, with some added bells and whistles. Great for existing Kindle users, but I doubt the device will have staying power in the market once iPad 3D and iPhone 5 ETC all start to pick up steam. The lead APPLE has accrued is going to be impossible to overcome, and I can't see FIRE stealing any marketshare away from the iPad

Impulsively purchased. I have 6 weeks to change my mind.

My wife was going to get a Kindle anyway so I'll just give her my Kindle Keyboard* and I'll take this one.

* What a terribly clunky name. Why is this not a Kindle Classic?**

**Not Kindle Klassic.

I've been on the fence about getting one for awhile now, but I think I'm definitely going to spring for the $100 model.

A lot of people seem to be downplaying this a bit. This is what you call a disruptive move in my opinion. It completely changes how Amazon must be thought of from now on. Especially considering how its browser is going to work. Amazon is aiming for Google, Apple and Microsoft levels of importance to the tech sector. Can you imagine how much a bundle of this and Amazon Prime at a discount is going to sell?

Regarding media consumption, the big media companies are going to hate this thing with every fiber of their being. Itunes got them with their pants down. Netflix streaming surprised them but they seem to be doing a good job of drowning them in the bathtub right now. But this play working for Amazon will be itunes+netflix+HOLY SHIT JEFF BEZOS IS NOW THE MOST POWERFUL MAN IN HOLLYWOOD. Expect a ton of downplaying and misinformation from the big media controlled outlets.

Until they're making their own OS for the thing from scratch instead of using an Android reskin they're not supplanting anyone.  The biggest thing about this is that they're making a very strong move towards the Gilette model (which some people said they should've done with the original Kindle).  Sell the tablets incredibly cheap, and make up the loss through the service the tablet needs to stay useful.

The biggest drawback of this thing as a mobile media hub:  There's no microSD slot.  Or any other form of storage expansion.  So you've got the effectively infinite Amazon cloud, but only when you've got a data connection, otherwise you've got 8 gigs and that's it.

Also: (and I know nobody's really going to care about this)  Without memory expansions it's going to be practically impossible to root the damn thing, which means Android Market will never be on it, which means no Google Apps.

They may as well be making one. They're pretty much forking android with this. And Silk, their browser, creates a whole ecosystem separate from and above the one controlled by the big three. Not to get overly technical but it works in a quite different way from anything mainstream right now. With this, everything is being done on Amazon's gigantic server farms and the page is a single data stream that goes to the tablet. Apple and Google and Microsoft could only dream of such a level of access and control over the user experience.

If this works I easily expect Amazon to be the most valuable tech company in the world by next year. Whether that is a good thing is debatable.

There's a usb 2.0 slot so you could connect the SD or microSD card via an adaptor. Otherwise, it's just the 8gb internal memory if you want to watch a movie / tv show while commuting.

It's a MicroB USB 2.0 connector. For charging and synching to a PC, It won't have USB Host functionality in the kernel, so even if you got a male-to-female micro USB to regular USB adapter, anything you plugged in wouldn't work.

You will be able to sideload the marketplace and apps on the Fire. I read this in a couple of places.

I stand corrected. This is an odd ommission. It's meant to be something you can use away from home but 8gb storage is not very much. Allowing expandable storage would be useful in places without wi-fi. I know they are championing the cloud but unless I'm being stupid you need wi-fi for that. Does Amazon allow you to play tv shows and movies transferred to external hard drives?

Hmm. Did a devious competitor leak this rumour about the Kindle Fire 2?

How would this affect the way I would watch movies again, again?

On hand-held tablet vs. not on a hand-held tablet.

Link to article up top.

It was a rhetorical question. In other words, I'm not watching movies on any mobile device.

Fair enough.

You could carry around most TVs these days.
