EASTERN PROMISES 2 STILL POSSIBLE AND SO IS… THE FLY 3?!

Cronenberg casually drops that he penned that rumored FLY project himself, and it was a sequel.

I like that while Cronenberg isn't following the same tract anymore, he doesn't distance himself from his old work. What with The Fly opera and everything, he seems perfectly happy to revisit that world, and I'll be perfectly happy to watch him do it if he so chooses. I've said this before, but more than any of the other "genre guys" of his generation, he's totally kept his shit together because he never let the system fuck him, because he never got lazy, and because he chose to evolve.

I'm completely down for this.  By the way, he also just shot down the rumors of him being involved in an American remake of Timecrimes.  Apparently it was offered to him, he turned it down, and that was that.

As for post-Cosmopolis?  I'm up for anything from him, really.  As far as I know, he only has these projects waiting in the wings:

As She Climbed Across The Table

- An adaptation of the Jonathan Lethem novel.  Right now, I'm guessing this is likeliest to be his next film after Cosmopolis.

Eastern Promises 2

- Which is apparently only on its second draft, so it looks like it isn't as far along as most thought.

Untitled Fly Project

- The aforementioned film.

Untitled Original Project

- He spoke recently of an original script that I'm assuming isn't the Fly sequel.

And that's it, folks!  Barring his adaptation of Ludlum's The Matarese Circle (with Denzel Washington & Tom Cruise) coming back together over at MGM, he has nothing else on his plate.  London Fields and Maps To The Stars are two other projects that were put on the backburner around the time Eastern Promises was made.  Either of them could catch his interest again at some point (particularly the latter), but considering the fact that he hasn't mentioned them in a long time........I'd say they're dead.  He has no interest in directing Painkillers anymore, although he has mentioned that he wouldn't mind at all if someone else really wanted to make it.  Red Cars was always a passion project of it, but it seems these days that he has given up on getting it made at this point.  Basically, what he does next will likely be from the above list or something else entirely.
