WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT TETSUO

It will be interesting to see how this turns out.  Does anyone know if they still going for a two-part adaptation?

1) I am not familiar with this property

2) I don't think Hedlund was terrible in TRON, but he sure wasn't memorable, and while I hold no resentments towards him, I'd rather not see him continue on as a movie star. He had his shot

Hedlund didn't have much to work with in Tron.  He fared much better in Wan's Death Sentence.  I don't know if I've seen him in anything else though, so I haven't really formulated a strong opinion on him.

It's like they're casting the whitest actors in Hollywood to SPITE Akira fans.

Anyway, this Miller kid gives me the creeps. He's already got a strong resume of fucked up, dysfunctional, deranged kids in some GREAT movies. He's good, but, I dunno, he's so off-putting I kinda DON'T want to see him in any more movies.

Eisenreich looks and acts like a young DiCaprio. I kinda thought he would have bigger roles by now. If he doesn't end up in this, he'll end up in some other big blockbuster, since the cast wish list for every blockbuster features the same cheap young white guys.

So this pretty much confirms we won't be seeing Neo-Tokyo right?

I know he's Korean, but RAIN from SPEED RACER and NINJA ASSASSIN needs more work. He's got real charisma. I'd take him over Hedlund any day

And Plisskin, he wasn't bad in TRON, but I don't really remember him enough in DEATH SENTENCE to comment

What's worse: whitewashing, or randomly casting one Asian as another?

I can never tell. Where's that Whitewashing thread?

Also, Kate, you don't know Eisenreich, you don't remember most of Hedlund's roles, and you know nothing about Akira. Why are you posting in this thread? They don't give out rep points to high post counts, you know.

"I don't know this, never heard of this, not familiar with this. But gee, it sounds alright. I guess. Maybe."

I think it's obvious by this point this isn't going to be Neo Tokyo. But it really, REALLY doesn't have to be.

Yeah, sorry, but I can't manage much enthusiasm for yet another explicity Asian property getting whitefaced at every opportunity.  Sure, this kid delivered a great performance and is entirely deserving of new projects, but not at the expense of actors of color who are rarely given the honor to represent their own cultural properties.  Fuck, how more explicity Asian a name can Tetsuo be for these insufferable casting agents?  Aren't there more suitable Asian actors than Blandy Hedlund, whose involvement in Tron probably had zip to do with its box office intake anyway?

Yeah, Akira is really special and is getting a sub-Airbender treatment.  Sue me if I'm not walking in with an open mind when this represents yet another close-minded process in adapting an Eastern property.

He was Billy Darley, the villain (or as my pals in the B Movie Thread would call him, THE MAIN GUY)....

Not for nothing, but the word Akira should probably appear somewhere in the first graf there.

A-fucking-men. I just don't care anymore. Pop will eat itself. I'll just be somewhere else.

Well, I heard talk that they were going to change the name from Tetsuo to Travis or some other Westernised name anyway.

This doesn't sound promising:

and these are some good questions:

It would be potentially more interesting if they're going with this that they made New Manhattan look more like an Asian city with some kind of futuristic fusion appearance. It could give them an avenue to keep the names the same and also create a radically different appearance for the future.

I'm with you on this. I couldn't help but feel that despite being unknowns, either of these two taking on this role would be exactly "forcing names that don’t belong". In some ways this makes the whitewashing even more blatant. They don't even have the excuse of casting box office draws or big names. It's just a preference to cast white guys most of the general public doesn't know instead of Asian guys most of the general public doesn't know.
