Oh, you Metal Gear fanatics. You can’t be deterred by anything, can you? Sure, the first Metal Gear Solid was amazing, a new type of gameplay (fuck Tenchu!) mixed with an incredible, cinematic feel… but the sequels? The second one was an obtuse mess, fun to play in spurts but not a fraction of the game the original was, and the third, well, the less said about that the better. The PSP games were damn fun, at least… but it’s been 10 years since a console got a good Metal Gear. But that doesn’t deter you, does it?
Can Metal Gear 4: Guns of the Patriots really change things around? You’ve all seen the tons of trailers and screenshots that have appeared for the game over the last few years (Konami sure hasn’t skimped on making new ones for every single event) but I’ll still be damned if I can figure out what new feature the game has that’s got everyone excited. Except for the graphics it looks like more of the same…
Anyway, some details have been confirmed for the launch. The official release date is indeed Thursday, June 12th, 2008. “Blockbuster events and premieres are a tradition of the summer,” said Kazumi Kitaue, Konami Chairman and CEO in a press release. “We anticipate that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots fits that bill perfectly, and consumers will be waiting in line to get their copy of the game just like it’s a hit Hollywood movie.”
That’s most definitely true, especially when you take into account the pre-order program they’ve got running. Starting in April, people who get pressured into preordering it at a game store will get a Metal Gear Saga 2.0 DVD, containing a Prologue that recaps the franchise (cause everyone just loves that story!), a 20th Anniversary retrospective, character bios for Big Boss, Liquid Snake, Solidus Snake, and Solid Snake, plus a collection of international trailers (all 2,000 of them!) of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
The biggest bonus, though, will be a special insert that contains a download code for the Metal Gear Online beta test, which will go live in late April.
Oh, did I forget to mention that online’s been confirmed? The final game will launch with the Metal Gear Online “Starter Pack”. What’s that mean? Well it’ll be barebones, of course, and force you to download new content to get the most out of it. The game will support 16 player online games where you’ll “battle it out using the latest weapons and stealth techniques.”
Those of you without a PS3 to play this apparent system-seller? You’ve got an option to buy this sexy bundle-

It will come with the 80 gig PS3, the brand-new Dualshock 3 controller (bout time, Sony), and the game. All that for $500 bucks, which even I have to admit is tempting.
So there you have it, Metal Gear otakus… your plans for the next few months.

" and the third, well, the less said about that the better."
Are you fucking kidding? MGS3 was awesome. I don't know a single fan that wasn't happy with it.
obviously you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. mgs3 was awesome.
can i borrow $500?
can i borrow $500?
I'm a little miffed at that line too. Snake Eater was definitely my favourite.
It was the most compelling and cinematic of the games, had the most diverse gameplay and a catchy theme song.
Yeah, you're waaay off on the critical and gamer consensus for MGS3.
What I'm most excited about is the fact that the PS3 bundle includes the (available separately) Special Edition of the game with an extra Blu-Ray disc. I was afraid Sony would just pack-in the standard edition.
I agree. MGS3 was my favorite. I thought it was awesome.
Man, MGS3 was phenomenal. I don't know what game you were playing.
First you talk crap about Lost when it's never been better and now you deride Metal Gear Solid 3…Alex, Alex…you need to grow some taste. 😉
Yeah man, there was this huge consensus even with critics that MGS3 was fantastic.
better watch out Alex, those Metal Gear fanboys are vicious
This still won't sell me on PS3. And let's face it, this and Vader in Soul Calibur are the only bright spots the system has going for it.
I hated MGS3. Mostly the eating crap. God I was annoyed every time I'm in the middle of a fight an my power is going down because I was hungry.
Sorry fanboys. MGS3 blew.`
I think you meant to say VERY MINOR MARKETING details discovered.
zachra. kill yourself. i'm banking on the only reason you're not "sold" on the superior machine that is PS3 is probably because you can't afford it .
and MGS3 was a classic.
I wasn't aware that downloading extra things to be added to a segment of a game had suddenly gone sour in the same generation that it was introduced. Of course, last I checked, a news article also usually had further research than said reporter's personal recollection of something. There's a difference between snark and plain laziness, you know.
Hey Alex, why don't you change the name of your column from MCP to FEPS, as in 'Fuck Everything Playstation', since it seems that Sony can never do anything right by you, as opposed to the precious XBox. It looks like the only reason you reported on MGS4 was to throw some jabs at Sony and the franchise. I hope this 'apparent system seller' does indeed sell many PS3's, as it's the best console around.
Metal Gear is a fine series of games, but it has never been and never will be a system-seller.
I am no Sony fanboy (I have a 360 and no PS3), but I AM a fan of quality software. MGS3 is AAA a-holes.
Just to repeat what everyone is saying, you must be totally stoned out of your mind. Metal Gear Solid 3 is one of the best games anyone has ever made.
Yeah man… what the fuck are you talking about? MG3 was a great game…
Alex, maybe you'd like MGS3 better if you played it after removing the beehive from your vagina. That's right, you have a vagina!
But would I have to eat it to regain my health?
MGS3 was great, the only thing I didn't like was the naming convention of the bosses. C'mon, the Pain?
MGS3 was the best game of 2004 (IMHO of course). The way that that gameplay was came to fruition in the boss fights was way ahead of its time.
Also disliking MGS2's narrative is like leaving No Country For Old Men and saying you didn't like the ending.
I'd say something snark-y right about now in response to the MCP Metal Gear Surge of 2008, but that last comment by 'Yet' is giving me an ulcer.
Every MG after MGS does indeed suck. The only hope for GOTP is Snake and Otacon, alone, frightened, and gay. Hardcore gay. Penis in ass gay.
Then, and only then, will this series be saved. Through the power of gay sex.
