Those bow-legged horse thieves at Ain’t It Cool News have scored today’s other big poster exclusive: the official teaser for Will Eisner’s The Spirit. And while I love the design of it, there’s no gettin’ around the Frank Miller of it. For those of you who were hoping for a Spirit that was faithful in look and narrative to Eisner’s original… I’m going to urge you to concentrate on the narrative.
Like Drew Struzan’s Hellboy II poster, you’ll be able to pick this up over the weekend at the New York Comic Con (the only difference being that the Struzan is a limited edition, so take that, Quint!). Lionsgate is sticking to their January 16, 2009 release date, which is looking like a stroke of genius after Cloverfield‘s massive MLK Holiday opening.

Wow… It's like since Miller couldn't get Sin City going he just took another property and perverted it to fit those particular aesthetics. Oh well, hopefully it'll be cool…
Remember when Batman fought Superman and won? That was cool. No telling what direction uncle Frank took this one. Next time he wins an Eisner@SDCC (the REAL nerd con of the year here on the left side of the geekosphere) someone should totally call it…."suck-up."
I smoked a cigarette with Frank recently I am proud to say and he had a bit of a cold. All I can say is, "gritty." I am not bothered by the artistry of this advert that is target marketing the tiny and strong smelling tribe of Miller fans. Perverted? I think Frank would like that.
Honestly, this is the LEAST Miller-esque thing they've had out so far. The title font and the text-as-background-element are MUCH closer to Eisner's version of things.
"MUCH closer to Eisner's version of things." …if Eisner was trapped in 300-land. And REALLY liked Sin City. And the Grindhouse poster. And things that suck.
This proves nerdom will get upset about absolutely anything. Is the art cool? Yes. Did they care about The Spirit or even know what that was before Miller made his movie? I'd say "no" more than not. And now Miller has to be as faithful as Sin City was to his book…I guess?
I don't know Eisner's stuff all that well, but I do know that he used the text in that way a lot. How can people bitch so much about something they haven't seen?
Shit man, it isn't Eisner making The Spirit movie, it's Frank Miller making The Spirit movie. How faithful does he have to be to the original material?
Nice to see Frank Miller is still in his All-Star Batman & Robin creative mode.
Oh well…
This is an OUTRAGE!! I hate this so much. Anyone who likes this is a moron and I hate you!
Actually, this looks like like one of Eisner's title pages. Only with a wash of Miller.
