Todd Field is developing Blood Meridian with producer Scott Rudin.
This shit is such old news that it ran in the LA Times ran it on August 17, buried in a story about the filming of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. Also mentioned in the piece is that The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford director Andrew Dominik wants to make McCarthy’s Cities of the Plains.
Ridley Scott had been attached to Blood Meridian before, but his plate keeps filling up with new projects. Todd Field is a really exciting filmmaker, and his Little Children is one of the better literary adaptations of the last decade, one which kept the voice of author Tom Perrotta quite nicely. I’d like to see if he can do the same with McCarthy’s voice, something that the Coen Bros acheived with seeming aplomb on the also Rudin-produced No Country for Old Men.
Again, this is old, old news, and I’m sorry if you already knew about it, but it slipped by us and would have continued to do so had I not gotten an email about it yesterday (which I have since deleted so I cannot give proper credit. Sorry!).

well, I didn't know this. And I'm glad I do…In The Bedroom and Little Children are great films. Ridley Scott seems too much like a comptetent film-making machine these days whereas Todd Field's films have real character.
Love that book. Hope he can do it justice.

just finished Blood Meridian last week and did the obligatory search for essays/reviews/film adapdation news and the only place i heard about Field being involved was on IMDB. but i just couldn't believe it, so thanks for clearing that up
I love that Todd Field is involved. He directed the better episodes of HBO's Carnivale, which is not so unlike Blood Meridian in terms of darkness and sometimes violence. Those worried should rest easy, in my opinion. Field's episodes also displayed a much more savvy use of visuals than In the Bedroom or Little Children. I believe Field is the true heir to Kubrick, btw, not your Aronofskis. We'll see.
Little Children was awesome. Jackie Earle Haley saying "Don't tell on me" while jerking off next to his date topped my previous favorite equally disturbing/hilarious line from Happiness where Philip Seymore Hoffman says "Are you wet?" right before slapping some semen on a picture and pasting it to his wall. Oddly enough, they were both talking/jerking off to the same girl, Jane Adams. What a career she is having. Sure she won a Tony, but some roles just stand out more than others. Her parents must be proud.
Not sure if Ridley is still on this or not. (this next part is going to sound ridiculous) I was in his office at RSA the other some time ago and there was a copy of the script on his desk with some notes. So the fact that he's been looking at this is a given, but not sure how seriously. To echo Devin, is dance card HAS been filling up lately! Maybe he'll just produce?
I hadn't heard this before, so thanks for sharing. Blood Meridian is my favorite Cormac McCarthy book, so I'm looking forward to this one.
