Danny Boyle’s career has already been one of great highs [Trainspotting, 28 Days Later], solid movies [Millions, Shallow Grave], and ambitious movies with potential for greatness that fell short of the mark [Sunshine, A Life Less Ordinary]. Then there’s The Beach, which I enjoy quite a bit despite it being a missed opportunity.
Slumdog Millionaire is his latest, and a veer off in an entirely new direction for the somehow still underappreciated filmmaker. Seriously, this guy buries Guy Ritchie in the dirt and doesn’t get a fraction of the buzz.
The story centers around a young Indian man who goes on a game show to find his lost love, and ends up embroiled in controversy and just about everyone who has seen it has said it’s damn near a classic bit of filmmaking.

Finally, Boyle is getting some respect. I actually think Sunshine is better than a missed opportunity, and was my favorite movie of 2007. I agree with the rest of what you said and even The Beach is way better, in retrospect, than I originally thought it was. I think with it coming out at the peak of Dicaprio mania, put a shadow over how good the movie actually is(although the book is still way better, and Leo is still a bit annoying in it in parts). So glad I got to see Slumdog in the theater. Fearing it might suffer the same fate as Sunshine, I dragged my wife into the city, which she wasn't too happy about, right when it came out. I loved it and so did she. Hopefully, this will hit more than a few theaters and Boyle will finally get some love, not necessarily from the critics, but from people simply being able to see his movies in the theater where they are meant to be seen. Word.

28 Days Later=a great high? You must be high. That movie was great for a few minutes when it showed the creepy abandoned cityscape, then the "zombies" showed up. Oh, I'm sorry. Not zombies, but rather crazed flu patients. The Infected? Please! I've seen kittens playing with string that were scarier! "RAR! I'm going to eat you! I have a case of the sniffles, and the tissues are GOOOOOOOOOOONE!"
