We told you the other day that Bryan Singer is returning to the X-Men universe with X-Men: First Class, a movie that’s about Cyclops’ attempt to get 10 million frequent flyer miles. Now talking with Variety Singer reveals some more aspects of the film, and what he’s hoping to do with it:
“This is the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where there relationship took a wrong turn,” Singer said. “There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from ‘X-Men’ will figure into the plot, though I don’t want to say which ones. There will be a lot of new mutants and a great villain.”
The question for me is whether or not they’re going to shoehorn Wolverine into this one, and I suspect they in fact will do just that.
So it’s going to be Magneto and Xavier in their 20s, and the X-Men as kids, so it’s all new casting. Who could the villain be? There’s a plethora of baddies in the X-Universe to choose from as the movies only skimmed the surface of the comics. It also sounds to me like Moira McTaggart will be making an appearance this time.
I’m sort of surprised they don’t just reboot the thing. I guess they’re going to do it like X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which was a period piece without making all that many references to the period.

Reading between the lines….This is the formative years of Xavier and Magneto… oddly contrasting with my most astonishingly dismal career trajectory…. and the formation of the school and where there relationship took a wrong turn…. like, you know, when I made Superman uses his super senses to become a super stalker/peeping tom" Singer said. "There is a romantic element… not far removed from Marc Forsters love of scarfs, and my love of hitting up another X-Men movie when my career is in a tailspin…. and some of the mutants from 'X-Men' will figure into the plot….. like you couldn't figure that out from the fucking title and your earlier description of Xavier and Magneto being in the film… though I don't want to say which ones…. because than it would just be obvious that I am doing this strictly for a paycheck… There will be a lot of new mutants and a great villain… except this time he will be behind the lens and his next victim is your eyes, ears and wallet….
no
Liked that frequent flyer miles joke. If Wolverine shows up, maybe everyone'll get amnesia bullets put in their heads so they'll all conveniently forget they've met before. BTW, was that a direct quote from Variety? I'd have thought they'd know the difference between "there" and "their."
If Moira MacTaggart is in the movie, the villian has to be Proteus. Team of mutant kids learning to control their powers, against a mutant kid who has lost control of his powers. Xavier wants to help the kid, Magneto wants to use him as a weapon. This thing writes itself. And leave Wolverine out of it. He had his chance at a prequel, and he pooped all over it.
wasn't moira in x3? The lovely Olivia Williams seems to think so.
and it's Mactaggert.
bTW x:3 was great FTW
Ugh… prequels.
Was I the only one to interpret "romantic element" to mean that Charles and Magneto finally consummate their epic love?
I couldn't help but make that interpretation myself.
What the hell did you guys do to that picture of Bryan Singer? Looks like someone cut off the hinge of his goddam jaw!
Keep the "Star Trek: Nemesis" method by casting the brilliant Tom Hardy as young Xavier!
As somebody already said, The Usual Suspects was a fluke. Also, is Singer doing this unecessary X-Men reboot before or after the unnecessary Battlestar Galactica reboot?
Jesus fucking christ. So instead of doing superman 2, he's doing another x-men movie as if that's any better than having another go at superman? I love you bryan Singer. I'm sorry for bashing returns and now you're just going to say fuck it, I'll do x-men again? Wtf man… Oh and I'm about to rip into you, devin for that avatar review. You are WRONG WRONG WRONG.
Ouch, he's looking a bit Tom Hanks in Philadelphia… Is he dying or one of these marathon running addicts? Hardy is a good pick, but who for Magneto?
@#13: really hope that's not a homosexual and-there-for-AIDS ref, cus…though I am not a fan of the Singer in question, you may be worse.
therefore
their four
there, for
reference or not, that is a strange shot of Singer-maybe he's been checking out Madonna's doctors
Can someone explain the frequent flier miles joke?
Um, Liquid, DC isn't allowing him to do another Superman movie, based on some rights issues, and also that Superman Returns was one of the worst pieces of shit ever put on film. Was a terrific idea to make a Superman movie that bore no resemblance to anything released about the character in twenty-goddamn-years, making him Jesus and a creepy stalker, and then adding in a kid for no reason. Bringing back real estate Luthor, the most boring of all Supes villians, was just the cherry on the shit sundae.
Singer is a hack, I'd rather have Ratner in for First Class or a Superman: Reboot. At least it'll be halfway entertaining.
@#14: I am a fan. Very much so. And yes, I'm worried he may have a fucking serious life-threatening illness AIDS would be my guess with what seems to be some rather shocking weight loss. Let's hope it's either a really bad photo or the marathon running addiction (or even the Mathew Perry in Friends issue) eh, Mr PC Thought Nazi?
This is awesome news. A new Bryan Singer X Men movie!!
I really hope they leave Wolverine out of it though. The first movie was about him introduced to the X Men world. The comic survived just find without him for a pretty long time. After the first solo Wolverine movie and everyone thinking Deadpool was the best part of it maybe they are putting too much stock in a character that is sizzle to steak, but it's too much of a good thing.
Kill the X-Men franchise. Its just grown stale.
this is great news
