Linas Phillips’ ultra low budget Bass Ackward is one of the biggest buzz films in Sundance’s NEXT category this year. It’s a road trip comedy about… well, how about letting Phillips describe it. He talked with Cinematical and this is the ‘dude on the street’ description he gave of the movie:
The film is about a guy, a sorta lost soul type who’s a wedding videographer having an affair with a married woman. That falls apart and he gets kicked out of his friend’s place who he was staying with. But when someone gives him a van, he decides to drive back to the east coast to live with his parents. And on the road he meets some people that help him fall back in love with life again.
And now the clip. I thought this was really funny, in a truly bizarre, random and weird way. I’m looking forward to catching Bass Ackwards this week.

I don't know man….you thought Mystery Team was funny and that was one of THE WORST movies I've seen in a long time.
Yep, that looks like a Sundance movie alright.
"Let's do the title font like, you know, like a scribble on a high school text book. And don't worry about jokes, we don't need jokes. People just stand and look awkward. Awkward is the new funny."
Holy fuck. Keys to making a Sundance movie: do it all handheld, shoot only close ups, and make sure to cast a leading man with no charisma at all. Yay indie film!
There's some kind of indefineable comic voodoo and alchemy that goes on in this type of random comedy where sometimes it's really funny and sometimes it's cringingly tryhard. Luckily for the makers of this, and for me, this one works pretty nice. Only time will tell if it sustains over an entire movie.
