It's incredibly arrogant of you to dismiss your opponents as trolls, Devin. I loved Avatar (yes, even its storytelling, which was engaging without being pretentious and overly complicated), but I do acknowledge that it has flaws.

one of the biggest problems with Avatar is the lack of backstory.. as it stands, this is earths first contact with alien life, not some enemy in a jungle on the other side of the planet. It knaws at everything the movie is trying to be.. for me and one or two other people it seems like..

You liked Fantastic Four. You gave Pineapple Express 9 out of 10. You liked GI Joe. Please, stop holding yourself up as some arbiter of good taste. You were never going to like Avatar, you decided a year before it was released that it sucked. I'm delighted for Jim Cameron that countless multitudes of people disagree with you.

Awesome! Agree on all points. I enjoyed the thing entirely as a ride. It overtook my brain for a bit and I enjoyed it… But it's not really GOOD, like, at all.

Great & funny review! I personally liked Avatar more than Devin did and less than Nick did. I felt the movie fell apart towards the end where it became a very predictable and rote action piece.

I mean, the film looked amazing, but come on… was there a single moment at any point in the film where you didn't know EXACTLY what was going to happen? Count in me as one who absolutely detested Avatar (and I've adored every single other Cameron film). The fact that it's doing so well is unbelievably mind-boggling. However, I was on the complete opposite side of the spectrum in 2008, as I was utterly obsessed with The Dark Knight and would get very angry when the minority trashed it for what I thought were bullshit reasons. So I've decided to sit this one out, mostly, and just say good for Cameron. Let's hope his next movie is better and (PLEASE) let it not immediately be Avatar 2.
Oh and Devin also prefers Burn After Reading to A Serious Man, so he should never regard himself as the bastion of good taste.

Yeah he's got a point about those "marines" that Col. Quidditch was speechifying to in the film …. even while watching it in the theater I thought some of 'em looked like extras from "Outland" or something. I was like, wtf, maybe Sean Connery is on their ass and they had to make a quick getaway to Pandora.

This was nowhere near as funny as The Phantom Menace review. In fact, watching this made me want to see Avatar again. Plus, here's a news flash, Pixar are movies do the same shit. Predictable stories with flashy characters. For as cool as Wall-E looked, it's plot was pretty bare bones and simplistic, yet you jerk yourselves off over that shit.
