Like it or hate it, you have to admit that this weekend’s The Wolfman was dripping with period atmosphere. It felt like someone had gene spliced a Hammer film with a Universal classic and added a touch of modern gore. For me it worked, for others it didn’t, but everybody seems to recognize that the gothic mood, art design and ambience was aces.
And all of that was very close to being ruined by a rock score, which was put into place by some execs at Universal. It got yanked off the movie in the final weeks before release, thank heavens. That said, I don’t think the rock score sounds terrible, at least not the clip that I’ve embedded below. It’s just wrong for the version of The Wolfman that got made. I wouldn’t mind seeing a badass, stylish action movie use elements of this score some day. And since that’s where Paul Haslinger usually finds work…

Oh my God, that sounds like some shit they'd score over a fucking Twilight movie. Or over a Twilight trailer, at least. Holy shit, I am so glad we ended up with a Danny Elfman score, and it's probably been at least a decade since I said that.
Actually, one of my biggest complaints about The Wolfman was the lack of atmosphere. Sure, it looked like it should have been atmospheric, but it never really nailed it. It's a shame, really. There could have been a great movie here.
Despite personally liking the wolf man, I'm willing to bet any money sometime in the next couple years this is going to be one of those movie Faraci changes his mind on.
Sounds like the kind of shit that "Underworld" would have on the score. Fuck this shit.
GodDAMN Hollywood executives are shit if they even considered this score. What 22 year old exec thought this was a good idea? Fuck you brianless assholes.
It's always hard for a rock score to not sound cheesy and lame, unless it's from an actual rock band. Even then…rock guitars have almost never made me do anything other than cringe. Eric Clapton's work on the Lethal Weapon and RUSH scores are exceptions.
Wow, I'm sure I've heard this before. Ah yes, generic rock theme #1. Universal, Sony, whatever: I guarantee this is what the new Spiderman soundtrack will sound like.
I'm generally supportive of rock/metal as film scores (can't wait to hear what Muse does for Titans) but this is pretty terrible.
I like it a lot. Not sure if it would have worked with Wolfman. It kinda combines the heaviness of Pelican with the atmospherics of Celtic Frost.
Were they not able to secure the rights to Power of the Night by MANN?

Well, I agree this isn't the score I would use for such a movie. But, I must say that I'm a fan of Paul Haslinger since the time he was with Tangerine Dream, he made some wonderful piece back then. I wouldn't mind seeing that kind of score on another movie!
I think there can be a place for rock scores in period pieces. 300 was a great example of how effective they can be. The dark and gory nature of this film lends itself to being able to use either a traditional score or a modern rock score. A great DVD extra would be the ability to watch the film with either score and make your own decision.
Sounds like the score from a video game, not a movie.
"Flash Gordon" the greatest rock score of all time. It's an excellent score to listen when riding around fucked up. Just thinking about it makes me chuckle…

Doesn't matter if it's the rejected score or not, its a terrible piece of music, and that is an injustice to use the word music.
