The Police Academy movies are the quintessential nostalgia nonsense; while the first film has some moments, the sequels are a steady stream of shit running down Hollywood’s leg, and the only way one can have any warmth towards them at all is if you were a kid when you first saw them. In other words who really cares about the Police Academy movies?
New Line is hoping someone does, since they’re rebooting or restarting or something or other the series with original producer Paul Maslansky, who says they’re bringing in a whole new generation of totally wacky cops.
“It’s going to be very worthwhile to the people who remember it and to those who saw it on TV,” Maslansky said. “It’s going to be a new class. We hope to discover new talent and season it with great comedians. It’ll be anything but another movie with a numeral next to it. And we’ll most probably retain the wonderful musical theme.”
So the lack of a numeral is what will differentiate this new film from the insipid sequels. Nice.
Today’s one of those days where I see a story like this and I wonder what I’m even doing writing about this business.

They should make them TSA agents this time.
But I liked the old new Police Academy. I think it was called Super Troopers?
There are a lot of good performances and low brow gags scattered throughout the first six of these. G.W. Bailey is always entertaining, as is George Gaines. Later films have great schtick from Rene Aberjonois and Kenneth Mars. I'll take them over many modern comedies, which are equally awful but don't seem to know it.
Just bring back Michael Winslow. Even when I was 8 he was the only thing I truly liked in those movies.
I remember the flicks for slapstick and characters. Any deviation from that would be a travesty. That said it'll be hard to duplicate Jones, Hightower, Tackleberry, Sweetchuck, Zed, Harris, Hooks, Callihan, Lassard & of course Mahoney.
Let's start casting this now… I see McLovin and Galifinakis as two of the new recruits already.
