Earth’s Mightiest Fans recently had the chance to pick Joe Johnston’s brain on the casting of Chris Evans as Captain America after a much-publicized search. First, on the casting itself, Johnston commented: “Casting Captain America is really casting
two roles…Steve Rogers before and after the transformation from 98
pound weakling to perfect physical specimen. I can’t divulge how we’re
going to do it, but the performance will be Chris Evans from beginning
to end.”
Secondly, on Evans landing the role: “Chris didn’t audition
at all. I was already familiar with everything he’d done and was
championing his cause, not that I had a fight from the Marvel team.…It was really [Evans’] wonderful enthusiasm for [the art and designs] he saw that cinched the deal.”

I really don't want this guy to be directing. He sounds just like McG when that idiot began talking up Terminator. Fuck.
2, I think your problem with McG was far bigger than the way he talked about his movies at that point. His record is awful, and he calls himself "McG," for example.
I'm with #3, Johnston at least has some good movies under his belt. And on a more recent note, it's hard to determine if he's responsible for the problems in THE WOLFMAN, as there seemed to be many irons in the fire on that thing and he came on board so late. More of a hired gun situation, whereas Marvel seems to be trying to take a Pixar route with regards to story development and he's had plenty of time to shape whatever vision he has. I was skeptical of Favreau, he was the ELF and ZATHURA guy before IRON MAN. Look at him now. If Johnston tries to do good here I think he will.
@#2 — Joe Johnston directed The Rocketeer and October Sky, for fuck's sake. You're comparing him to the guy who directed the Charlie's Angels movies. I think Johnston is just about as qualified as anyone to make a movie about an All-American WWII super soldier. You talk like you've never heard of him, philistine monkey.

I can almost see Johnson making these comments through clenched teeth. His guy was Krasinski (wisely). He's trying to make the best of a bad situation. Nothing against Evans, he's fine, but casting a guy who's already been in 5 comic book movies shows, if nothing else, a lack of imagination. Which I think will bite Marvel in the ass when it's time to promote this thing.

jeffmc2000 – you are bang on the money. With a movie this big, I want to see something I've not seen before.
To be honest Captain America is a bore in the comic book world so I am not too excited about this movie regardless of who directs it. I do think Devins huge crush on Chris Evans is amusing though.
