Casino Royale was excellent. Quantum of Solace was fucking awful. I wouldn't call that a slam dunk.

One would think that they might want to go forward with two surefire moneymakers if things are wobbly. Just make the Hobbit and the Bond movies and see where you're at after that.

Sony's distributed the last couple, right? Do they get first shot at acquiring the Bond rights for themselves if MGM caves? I'm sure it's more complicated than that, but if it IS something so relatively simple, then maybe MGM just needs to be put down already so that the people that know how to make money can do it already.

#2 Quantum of Solace was ok, wasn't great, wasn't terrible, I realize this is the internet and taking the most extreme stance on everything is the norm, but still.

Wow, MGM fucked up good. And the plug will be pulled on The Hobbit any day now as well.

EON has got to be already in talks with other studios.

Comment #6—–Ummmmm, no. They'd probably just take what already works and go about with business as usual, because unlike MGM, they're not constantly on life support. They'd continue making money with the Bond flicks without the worry of having to rely on them to keep everything else afloat.

I don't get the hate for quantum. I thought it was pretty slick.

This would never have if TimeWarner had just bought MGM/UA when they had the chance in 2004.

So…two of the five biggest franchises in Hollywood history are going to be killed because MGM is dying? No. Not happening. If MGM is unable to take care of business, then some other studio is going to take care of business for them. These properties are too valuable to die.

I would accept waiting five years if it ended with someone like Michael Fassbender as Bond.

I think the deal with this is that MGM's been in limbo long enough now that EON was just getting too deep in the hole, paying for the development of the next Bond with no money coming in. If the Broccoli's were smart, they would have started some other franchise on the side at Universal or Paramount the last time this happened in the early 90's. Then they wouldn't have all their fortunes tied up in a single wobbly studio, and wouldn't have to fire all the secretaries every twenty years. The last time this happened, they lost Timothy Dalton. I wonder if Daniel Craig will still be around when the smoke clears?

@ comment 10 – Yeah, I actually liked Quantum better than Casino Royale, which to me felt like a rip off of popular spy movies of the last decade instead of a Bond film, or even just establishing a new identity for itself (I say as if it's easy).

@comment 16 – You seriously think that ROYALE was the rip-off? SOLACE was basically a Bourne film with a British accent. Royale was also very Bourne-ish, but maintained a little bond flavour due to at least being based on one of the books. SOLACE had no such excuse.

Wouldn't this movie actually help save the company?
