Word has come in a joint announcement from Omnilab Media and The Jim Henson Company (I caught it at ComingSoon) that the sequel to the 1982 fantasy epic, The Dark Crystal, titled Power of the Dark Crystal, is moving forward and that Peter and Michael Spierig (Undead, Daybreakers) are on board to direct in 3D. Omnilab’s production entitiy, Ambience Entertainment will be co-producing with Henson and execs for both companies, Christopher Mapp, Matthew Street, David Whealy and Brian Henson, Lisa Henson and Jason Lust, respectively, will be exec producers, along with Cinemarket Films’ Peter D. Graves. Craig Pearce (Moulin Rouge!, Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet) has scripted.
Michael Spierig said, “We feel a tremendous amount of responsibility in
telling this story with the same meticulous care that Jim Henson and
Frank Oz gave the 1982 original.” Added Peter Spierig, “This is a
chance to take the world of puppetry into the modern age by using
modern techniques (like motion capture CGI) and the tried and true
methods (like puppetry and animatronics) to create a one hundred
percent real world that is unique to The Dark Crystal.”
Power of the Dark Crystal is set hundreds of years after the original and concerns a mysterious girl made of fire who steals a shard from the legendary crystal with a Gelfling outcast in an attempt to restart the dying star at the planet core.

I've really wanted to like their stuff, but they seem to only ever turn out 40% of a finished movie with the rest being sort of an unfinished rough draft. The World of the Dark Crystal needs guys who can pull in 100%. But fingers-crossed having the script already covered will allow them to concentrate on the visuals/technicals, with Henson jnr and Co covering the performance side.
have yet to see "daybreakers" (which got great reviews on this site), but "undead" was ass….belongs with the rest of the horror drivel that substitutes bafoonish characters instead of anything original or creative on a technical or thematic level

Is Genndy Tartokovsky still working on this at all? That was a great film production I stopped hearing news about.
I'm really disappointed that Genndy's not on board anymore, I was looking forward to his (kinda) live action debut. Hopefully he's moved on to something bigger and better. But I'm sure the Sperigs will bring their A game to this one.
Ugh. Seriously, their backstory about making Undead was great, but the final result… terrible. I couldnt even make it through Daybreakers. They have talent, the kind that needs to be guiding in the hands of someone else, not writing/directing responsibilties.
I loved Daybreakers! While it is certainly flawed – I agree with the opinion that their films feel unfinished – it was a marvel of concept, production design and special effects on a tight budget. The acting wasn't half-bad either, despite the often ham-fisted dialogue. I think they could go far with a stronger script and I'm interested in seeing this…although a sequel to Daybreakers would be even better!
Hopefully Bindi Irwin will play a gelfling. She'll need no makeup other than the ears.
