Dumping
3D glasses into those cardboard bins at the movie theater is a moment
of great trust. You just sort of assume that happy theater employees
will take those glasses, sterilize them, and then give them out to folks
at a later show. But that’s not the case. Good Housekeeping did tests
on 3D glasses and found them to be disgusting, and to include such
bacteria as Staphylococcus aureus, aka the fucker that will give you a
Staph infection.
“We expected to find general
bacteria — nothing is sterile, but staph is not something to take
lightly,” Good Housekeeping’s
Carolyn Forte says. “We’re not saying that these glasses will make you
sick, but kids touch the glasses, touch their eyes and mouths — the
potential is there.”
Other
nasties found on glasses – including ones wrapped in plastic – include
bugs that cause conjuctivitis, sepsis and food poisoning. Doctors tell ABC
News that this probably isn’t that
big a deal, although having the glasses near your eyes and mucous
membranes could be troubling.
Still, even if it’s tough to get sick
from the 3D glasses there’s the ick factor. It’s just gross knowing
that you’re putting some kind of filthy thing on your face. I bet Howie
Mandell can never go to another 3D movie after this.

The Howie Mandel thing killed me.
Two words: Wet Wipes. Also, LOL @ the dude in the second row noshing on the pizza in the pic above.
Over here, you can keep the glasses and bring them along to the next 3D film you see. I'm not saying that prevents bacteria, but it helps prevent other people's bacteria.
This is all a conspiracy by Tom Rothman and Fox, so they can effectively launch their designer 3D shades line across the country!
disturbing to say the least. uggh!!
The solution: Keep your 3D glasses and bring them with you to the next showing. You're already paying for them with the inflated ticket price, so why hand it back?
pizza vs. mullet
pizza vs. mullet
Having been stuck in too many movies with too many kids, I'm trying to work up the required concern for many of them being wiped out by a raging staph infection. I know I can do it.
Still love that guy eating the pizza in this pic. Wonder if he knows he's famous?
So all that vomiting and pain during Avatar wasn't because the movie sucks?
I always wondered if they did clean them; I trusted that they did, even though there was always that thought in the back of my mind that they don't. Stupid fuckers.
This is why I keep a pair of my own to re-use each time. Yuck.
A similar report came out recently about iPads in Apple stores… which found many of the same contaminates as this. Let's face it, we live in a filthy world. Do you think evey door knob and shopping cart you touch in public is squeaky clean?
No need to become germiphobic over this.
You buy your own 3D glasses in Australian cinemas, it adds a dollar to the ticket price the first time.
part of the reason why i didnt dump my avatar glasses, and held on to them. now i bring my own pair.
the price of a single ticket is the other.
I work in a large movie theater chain. We participate in a recycling program where we send our used glasses back to the distributor. We only give customers new glasses in the plastic, though according to your article they may not be 100% clean, which now makes me not want to watch anything 3D.
I'm not sure why this was a news piece on CHUD, other than Devin has been adamantly anti-3D. You even include doctors saying it's not really a big deal. The world isn't sterile. Ever go out in public? Then you've touched something that someone else has touched and you have come in contact with germs and viruses. This is one of those stories where a million people wear the glasses with no issue, but some kid will get a staph infection and suddenly moms and PTAs will be outraged. Devin, you're better than this.
I doubt Howie Mandell or anyone like him would need to hear of this study to feel compelled to avoid 3-D movies and their reusable glasses. The guy has a profound germ phobia — alarms probably went off in his head the minute he even heard about the technology. That's what phobics are like — they don't need someone else to tell them to be afraid…their own minds do a perfectly good job of that. Someone with aquaphobia doesn't need anyone yelling "shark!" to make them want to stay out of the water. Their brain is already screaming that and worse.
the guy eating the pizza IS howie mandel.
and the pizza has staph on it.
and green peppers.
I want a pizza.
I knew there was a reason beyond the films that employ it being bad, that 3D was no good for me.
You could wear one and watch The Stand, and it would totally add to the experience.
Pretty sick that the "new" ones wrapped in factory plastic are coated with the same bacteria.
I hope everyone recognizes that besides staph, pinkeye and pneumonia, the rest of the bacteria they mention is basically shorthand for FECES. That's what happens if you don't wash your hands after going to the bathroom, you slobs. Good job getting poop all over the place!
It's a small subset of the bacteria that is all over the filthy/sweaty/musty theater anyway.
And don't ever go on public transport, or use publicly used facilities, or even was your own arse before your armpits as you can get fecal matter transmitted that way. FFS the likelihood of transmission is absolutely miniscule. And them talking about how children are prone? They are prone to catching fucking everything and by and large are seething little balls of virulent contagion anyway. People need to stop worrying about every potential little bug and just harden the fuck up.
At my theater, they don't keep the glasses. They package them up and send them back. For Real D, anyway. There is a local Limax theater that does re-use the glasses, though. So this is a good to know story.
Look everyone, Devin found a new reason to bitch and moan about 3D.
