We knew this some time ago, but now it’s official: Geoffrey Rush is returning as Captain Barbossa in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which will see he and Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow looking for the Fountain of Youth.
They’re the only two main returning characters from the first trilogy, but they’re being joined by a fairly large cast. Ian McShane is going to be baddie Blackbeard, while Penelope Cruz is playing his daughter. Stephen Graham has joined as Sparrow’s new sidekick and supposedly Keith Richards is coming back.
I was hoping that this film would be much leaner after the really bloated Pirates 3, but it sounds like they’re stuffing this one full of characters as well. Gore Verbinski is gone and this time it’s Rob Marshall, director of Chicago, who will be juggling all of this.

You forgot to mention the return of Jack the Monkey. I heard negotiations panned out at the last minute and he agreed to do a 4th film with the promise of additional mango slices in his fruit medley

As bloated as those 2 & 3 are, I still love 'em. Found it better to watch those 2 as a trilogy- Stopping DMC some time between rescuing Sparrow from the Cannibals & the big wheel (keep on turnin') sequence (I know- that's a big chunk… but I can't specifically remember the place… closer to the latter…), later moving on from there until sometime right before the Brethren Court, then picking up from there until the end. Again, I can't remember specifically where to stop/start (it's been awhile), but once they're on, it's easy to feel it out.
Anyway, bring on #4!
I didn't like any of the previous Pirates films. The first one had it's moments, but overall it wasn't a favorite of mine. But Rob Marshall is a fantastic 'ensemble' director. He knows how to work with a larger cast, more so than Verbinski. I may see this one because, let's face it, the moments I like in the first films were all with Depp and Rush.
When the 6 people are John Goodman, Precious,Vincent Pastore, Kirstie Alley,Kevin Smith and Zombie John Candy.
