The Monocular Group has made a trailer for The Expendables that is, frankly, better than anything Lionsgate has put together. It’s also hilariously misogynistic in its female panic warnings – oh no, dudez, they’re making movies that women like! It’s sort of the male moviegoer version of those white middle class people who think the world’s against them – a position of privilege (about 90% of mainstream movies are geared towards men) seems to breed a weird worldview.
But to be fair, it’s a good trailer, and it’s sort of funny, in a deeply terrified of women sort of way.

Wait, a Devin article about August 13th, and not a single "Scott Pilgrim" plug? That could have worked well in this trailer too. Y'know, something like "If you let Eat, Prey, Love win, or if you're a pussy and you see Scott Pilgrim instead…".

These ARE the only men you're allowed to love, gentelmen – which is why the ones you're not allowed to love are so much sweeter, as all these Hollywood tough guys know. By the way, I believe this trailer is entirely aimed at aging homophobic manchildren immasculated by the fact that they know what "G.N.O." stands for (I had to pause it and figure it out, so I won't be seeing this by torrent or multiplex).
It was going well until the faggy theme music kicked in. I mean "faggy" in the Louis CK, not-a-slam-on-homosexuals way. Look it up.

And it's a pretty fantastic trailer outside of the whole WIMMINFOLK ARE TAKING OVER MOVIES, WE NEED TO TAKE IT BACK angle to the copy (which you are right on the mark about, but the sad thing is that might actually work on this movie's target audience to make them go to the theater). Misogynist copy be damned, though, the second the loud music/action began I just started grinning. I will totally go watch this. And I'm a girl.

I think there is some truth to the fact that women are taking over the cinema. Let's face it, women are usually not tech savy enough to figure out how to illegally download a movie, so they are much more likely to go to a theater, or rent, to see a movie. As a result, the cash cows are now becoming more female oriented because they are still willing to pay for movies. While guys think they are so slick downloading torrents, as effectively pointed out in the trailer, they don't even realize they are robbing the studios of money they need to make guy oriented action flicks. Studios are profit based, and if there profits come from women, expect more female oriented releases. Just look what happened to MTV… and you call yourselves movies/music lovers…
I love it when you get all social justice-y. It is very true that people with privilege never see the world from being oppressed, so when they get asked to make very small efforts to make life easier for other people, you get such pushback.

90% of mainstream movies are geared towards men??? That seems like a stretch. 70%, at best.
I movie can be a hit these days if only adult women go—Tyler Perry, Sex And The City, etc. A movie that only appeals to adult men isn't going to be. All the geek appeal hits like Iron Man or Clash Of The Titans also appeal to women or kids. It may be wrong to say that women alone are the dominant force in what shows up at the movies these days, but women and kids, definitely.
Which faggy theme music? Refused or Andrew WK. Talkbackers here, by and large, have taste in music is pretty much akin to the CSI of the music world.
