Another game where I simply don’t meet the requisite fuck criteria. But, its impossible to pretend this isn’t THE game of the year for a lot of people, because it’s usually the ONLY game per year for a lot of people. Good for you guys. I’m mostly just gonna sit back, watch the frenzy happen, and get my kicks over telling asshole frat boys how much GameFlow and the strategy pad sound an awful lot like the macros and hotkeys from your average MMORPG. Between these games and fantasy football, sports fans have become RPG players so gradually as to be virtually imperceptible. And that tickles me.
OOOHHHHH: ON THE DLC TIP
RED DEAD REDEMPTION: LEGENDS AND KILLERS
Rockstar Games
XBox Live, Playstation Network
8/10
$9.99/800 MS points
Am I disappointed Red Dead Redemption‘s not getting the single player DLC love GTA IV did? A little. Am I gonna complain when the multiplayer DLC we are getting allows you to joust Indians and kill your opponents with a tomahawk to the chest? Christ no.
DRAGON AGE ORIGINS: THE GOLEMS OF AMGARRAK
Bioware/EA
XBox Live, Playstation Network, PC
8/10
$4.99/400 MS points
For those of you who felt Dragon Age just wasn’t difficult enough, Bioware is the sugar daddy who couldn’t stop pimping if he tried, adding yet another set of DLC which includes a brand spanking new dungeon and a couple of ball-crushingly hard enemies for you to take down. All this while they’re already hard at work on this game’s sequel and Mass Effect 3. Someone has investigated and made sure there isn’t some slave labor law being violated over there, right?
MONDAY NIGHT COMBAT
Uber Entertainment
XBox Live Arcade
8/10
1200 MS points
The Summer of Arcade keeps on keeping on. This is probably the title most likely to be overlooked this month (though I remain dubious there are still people out there who care about Lara Croft), and to that end, the price tag is probably the biggest deterrent its ever been so far. And that’s just unfortunate, because this does look like a cool little class-based shooter that is probably as close to a new Smash TV as we’ll ever get in this day and age. The show’s mascot in this game is a giant foam robot (think Hitchhiker’s Guide’s Marvin, but green) who runs about begging you to shoot him whenever he runs by. I don’t know if that’s work $15, but it is funny as hell.
ROCK BAND TUESDAY
Ministry Pack 02 ($5.49/440 MS points)
- Stigmata
- Thieves
- Jesus Built My Hotrod
$1.99/160 MS pts each
This is the Ministry pack that should’ve happened the first time. The band can get samey at times, but their early stuff provides the perfect industrial ass-kicking in the right doses. I don’t know how entertaining Jesus Built My Hot Rod could be as gameplay as pretty much the only proper environment to enjoy that song is driving down a highway at no slower than 120 mph, but it’s a welcome addition to the library.

ORDER OF THE BLACK
Black Label Society
Now that his former boss’ album has come and gone without disturbing anyone’s rest, it’s time for Zakk Wylde to weigh in. The riffs are appropriately large and crunching, the songs carry the expected quotient of dirge and doom (“Parade of the Dead,” “Black Sunday”). Modern metal has become a formalist’s game, like gymnastics or ice dancing: as long as the requisite moves are performed, and you stick the landing, you’re pretty much there.
COME AND GET IT
Eli “Paperboy” Reed
Retro-soul man makes his major label move. It’s an agreeable mix of Stax and Motown, lighter in touch than Saddiq or Jones, but with less personality. Reed’s generally the sensitive stud, ready to teach or be taught (“Help Me”), and he’s willing to forgive that poor misguided girl who just didn’t see his better qualities the first time around (“Name Calling,” “Time Will Tell”). The arrangements tend to the generic (the backing vocals, in particular, lack the creative counterpoint of their best Motown predecessors); for sheer instrumental ingenuity, the band takes a backseat to the Dap-Kings. But he’s got the pipes, and he’s equally comfortable crooning (“Tell Me What I Wanna Hear”) or stomping (“You Can Run On”). The James Brown move on “Explosion” is a mistake, but I suspect he half-knew that when he stuck it at the end of the album.
SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD
(ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK)
Various Artists
Since I’ve always admired Beck’s taste and intelligence even more than I actually enjoyed his music, I’m not surprised that he’d have the analytical chops to (re?)produce the generic pop-punk of Sex Bob-omb. Similarly, Broken Social Scene brings exuberance to their impersonation of Crash and the Boys, and Metric stands in nicely for The Clash at Demonhead. I don’t know that the music would particularly stand out if you just heard it coming over the radio, but if Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is half as good as its buzz, my guess is that these will serve as great aural souvenirs. There’s also a Stones track you probably don’t need, one by T. Rex you might not know, and a few tasty odds and ends from Frank Black, The Black Lips, and some others. Unfortunately, if you want to hear the midi version of the Universal theme that starts the movie, you’ll need to pick up Nigel Goodrich’s album of the movie’s instrumental score (which also includes two songs by Dan The Automater and a “fast version” of Beck’s “We Are Sex Bob-Omb”). Maybe not “epic,” but a long way from “fail.”
SOMETHING EXTRA SPECIAL:
THE COMPLETE VOLT RECORDINGS 1968-1971
Jimmy Hughes
There’s literally dozens of great soul artists who got lost in the amazing shuffle of music that Motown and the various Atlantic subsidiaries and indie labels produced in the 60’s; just wasn’t room for everyone. And, to be fair, it’s kind of hard to say that Hughes deserved the same level of attention that Otis and Wilson and Percy did; but at this remove, I’d certainly say he deserved his moment in the sun every bit much as, say, Johnny Taylor or Tyrone Davis. Grab this generous disk with lots of previously-unreleased tracks, surrender to “I Like Everything About You” and “I’m Not Ashamed To Beg And Plead,” with backing from folks like Steve Cropper, Al Jackson, and Duane Allman among others, then go looking for the previous collection of his sides for Kent and the amazing “It Ain’t What You Got” and “I’m Qualified.”
Other Noteworthy 8/10 Releases
Mike Posner, 31 Minutes to Takeoff. I presume that the purpose of “Cooler Than Me” was to become so annoyingly catchy that you’d never want to hear the guy again. Worked for me.
Brother Clyde, Brother Clyde. You have got to be fucking kidding me. Refugees from Hole, Motley Crue, and The Crystal Method(!) hook up with Hannah Montana’s dad, who claims to be “a rock and roll hellion.” To be honest, I didn’t even look for the entire album: the half-baked Linkin Park of the single, “Lately,” was enough achy-breaky pain for one day.
Laurence Juber, LJ Plays The Beatles Vol. 2. Lennon-McCartney as sleep aid. Having been in Wings for a couple months might (I say might) get you the slack to do this once. But not twice.
Various Artists, Many Hands: Family Music for Haiti. Do good intentions transcend inconsistent musical quality? It’s your thirteen bucks. If nothing else, it’s got me wanting to sample more from Caspar Babypants, Agent 23 Skidoo, and Bonga & The Voudu Drums of Haiti.
Lost in the Trees, All Alone in An Empty House. If you have ever thought that you wanted to hear an album that sounded like the title of this one… then this is definitely the album for you.
The Who, Live at the Isle of Wight 1970. Only the second live Who album of 2010; speed it up there, fellas. For what it’s worth, I’d go with the expanded Live At Leeds, but if you don’t have a live album yet from the Moon era, this’ll do just fine.

Date Night proved that FOX can always rely on NBC’s best to phone it in. However, Shawn Levy wasn’t able to water down the supporting cast. Common, Mark Wahlberg, James Franco and Mila Kunis are able to take a lackluster comedy and enthuse it with something better. Fey and Carrel do get moments to shine through, as they play up the awkward nature of their respective characters. But, this is still a film for people who find 30 Rock to be too fast-paced. If you pick up the film at Target this week, they’re selling an exclusive Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack.

Crumb was a revisit that caught me by surprise. I’m a big fan of Terry Zwigoff’s work, but I’ve never been able to pin down why I like the guy’s films. This documentary from 1995 takes a look at artist Robert Crumb, as he prepares to move to France. Citing that the former nation of Gaul is less appalling than America, Crumb opens up his personality before the camera. Zwigoff seemingly goes hands-off, while Crumb works with his family and his brothers. When all three Crumb men are in the same room, there’s something enlightening about the gathering. You can also see the man that was and what he would’ve became without his comic work. A few of the special features are ported over from the original DVD, but Criterion has struck a new commentary track and other goodies for the film’s debut into the Collection.

- Deleted Scenes
The Joneses was an indie flick that seemed to arrive almost as quickly as it left theaters. In the brief one week engagement it had in my area, I managed to get my ass to the local arthouse and watch the film. Well, it’s about as well-crafted as a Duchovny/Moore outing could have been. But, there are ideas at play in this film that border on inspired. A marketing team unit infiltrates the suburbs disguised as a family. By targeting all the consumer bases in the area, they move product and make the locals hang on their every word. It’s a great concept, but the film never really follows through on the impact. Give it a rental and check it out. Oh wait, you can’t because FOX has that 30 day delay for Redbox and Netflix. If there’s still an unshuttered Blockbuster near you, I’d recommend that route.
DEATH AT A FUNERAL

- Death at a Funeral: Last Rites, Dark Secrets
Death at a Funeral gets a remake roughly three years after its debut. Wow. Ponder that one, while you’re bitching about the Spider-Man reboot. It took them 37 years between The Wizard of Oz and The Wiz. The film works as an urban comedy that’s desperately trying to rise above Danny Glover pooping jokes. The Dinklage shows up to try and carry Frank Oz’s work past the clutches of Neil Labute. In the end, the unsung hero of the film is Chris Rock. Rock tries to balance respect and actual acting, as he realizes that most of this cast is carrying on like it’s a Dreamworks comedy.
