It’s been three years since Bioshock introduced everyone to the wonders of Rapture, and only a few months since 2K Marin introduced us to the blunders of their disappointing sequel. You’ll have to wait a few years for the real followup to the first game, which will be a radical departure from the soggy confines of Andrew Ryan’s undersea deathscape:
Bioshock Infinite – a prequel to the first game – is under development at Irrational Games under the watchful eye of series creator Ken Levine. This is great news for people who found the sequel uninspired, and were hoping for the game to make a venue change and incorporate some new ideas.
Set in 1912 aboard the floating metropolis of Columbia, Bioshock Infinite won’t rely on a nameless, faceless protagonist to tell its story. Instead, you’ll be playing the role of a fixer assigned to track down one of the inhabitants of the elusive city. Head over to Joystiq for coverage of the press release event and demo, which further details the themes Ken Levine wants to explore with the game.
Infinite won’t arrive until 2012. The wait might feel about that long.

I didn't even go near Bioshock 2 — didn't feel it was up to the challenge, but this looks like it is.
I'd hardly call a flying city a radical departure to a sunken city. They are both self-contained, isolated societies. It's just a simple analogue. Thematically they are identical.
Just like, thematically, Rapture is no different to a space ship.

^^^ Fuck Off!!! This makes Bioshock 2 look like a shitty cash-in even more.
Wow. This is looks identical to the original Bioshock trailer. Color me underwhelmed. But, I bought Bioshock 2, so, I'll probably get this.
You guys don't know shit about video games if you think Bioshock 2 was terrible. It was an improvement over the first, no mistake.
I do like the rose in the trailer. Reminds me quite a bit of a little easter egg in Bioshock 2 in regards to a former big daddy and his little sister. I'm wondering if they are going to have a similar type of ecosystem-economy in this game. Bioshock 2 felt like a lot more of the same from Bioshock. It managed to capture the environment really well, though the gameplay, while better, felt awfully backwards. Why is a big daddy going to be so tactically-minded, when the human you played in the first game was such a bruiser? The storyline just held together so much better in the first game. I'm hoping Bioshock Infinite gets back to that…
Just because it's set earlier than the original BioShock doesn't mean it's a prequel. Irrational's idea is that the same sort of bioshocking ideas can work in other venues. The name is purely marketing, brand identity and theme, not timeline.
Even if it doesn't tie directly into the Rapture storyline, the trailer makes it clear that Infinite is set in the same universe as Bioshock. I think you're using a narrow definition of 'prequel'.
