While The Thing prequel has already wrapped, producer Eric Newman sat down for a Q&A session with the folks over at io9 to discuss another John Carpenter remake – They Live.
According to Newman one of the things they’re considering changing is the use of the sunglasses, an element so critical in the original that it’s almost inconceivable without it. Here’s an excerpt from the interview:
“…we’re kind of exploring different versions of what is that thing that
allows you to see. But I’m not going to tell you what it is… it might be something different than sunglasses”.
The best thing to remember is that it’s so preliminary nothing is set in stone. They have a writer – Dan Weiss – but Newman goes on to say the remake is still a few years away at best. Regardless, the sunglasses are so connected with the original they’d be crazy not to include them.

I have a much better idea. Don't remake They Live at all.
Here's what they should totally do: make it the polarized 3d glasses they have in theaters now, and shoot the parts where you "see" the "real world" in 3d!
I feel like if you don't take full advantage of today's technology like that, you might as well just see comment #1.
"… it might be something different than sunglasses"
It's gonna be a god-damned iPhone app. I'm calling it now.
Wasn't Gaspar Noe, the director of Enter The Void an Irreversible interested in directing a remake or some sort of homage of/to They Live at one point? Now that would have been awesome.
"We're gonna use "alien vision" contact lenses instead of the shades. That's gonna be better regardless, but the real kicker is the alley fight. Let's throw out the wrestling bullshit and amp up the action. The audience wants a high octane MMA fight full of speed, blood and hits that make you hurt just to look at. Let's tap into that UFC fanbase. We need Brock Lesnar and Joe Rogan for consult and then we'll get Keith David in here to beat us to death with his voice for even considering a They Live remake."
BLASPHEMY.
this is what happens when producers and writers are 30 year-olds who've grown up nuzzling their TVs.
fucking TV babies without an original thought in their fuckin empty heads.
line em up for the firing squad!
Message to Eric Newman "I am here to chew bubble gum and kick ass, and I am all out of bubble gum" In other words, Leave It The Hell Alone!
Yeah, it's genuinely a shame that those studio guys love the same movies as we do, seeing as how they're in position to be able to remake them, and we really don't want them to.
#3: I came here to say the same thing. This movie does not need a remake much less a remake that is just marketing for smartphones.
Only a bunch of asses would remake this without the glasses.
Contacts? Ski goggles?
#3 has it. Hollywood pencil dicks.
Yes. It will be a cell phone camera that is purchased from the basement of the Bed, Bath and Beyond where Adam Sandler bought his magic remote control from "Click". Shia LeBeof and Lindsey Lohan will star, Rowdy Ronny will do an uncredited cameo as a level boss. The 'bubble-gum' line will be obliquely referenced as an in-joke.
Another remake… YAWN. Does anybody make original movies anymore?
#15 Nope. Okay, well, every few years something new slips in, but it's not the norm. Personally, I see no need for almost any remake or most sequels. And They Live was such a fantastic film to begin with!
