Last night at the Egyptian, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World was screened in anticipation of next week’s DVD and Blu-ray launch. In attendance were director Edgar Wright, stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Michael Cera, Johnny Simmons, Satya Bhabha, and comic book creator Bryan Lee O’Malley. Director Guillermo Del Toro was also there to introduce the film and lead a spirited question and Answer session. I was there, and – as you can see below – this was a good, honest talk about the movie.

Scott Pilgrim is a fantastic movie. If you hate on it, then you obviously didn't see it.
I saw it. I hate on it. I was hoping for some soul-searching in these videos as to the reasons behind its numerous failures. No surprise – this team of creative minds let me down again.
Have to agree with the hate on this one…it was a very juvenile, shallow movie that got pimped and prodded for being so much more
Just because there are people who didn't like the movie that doesn't mean that they are all idiot or deserve to take such scorn for their comments. I didn't see the movie based on my dislike for Micheal Cera movies. Plus I'm not a retro 8 bit videogame nerd or hipster. I may be dangerously close to generalizing the movie's audience, but I really don't think so.

You both added so much to the discussion by lingering around the comments section of an article about a movie you don't like…and your assessment is wrong since Scott Pilgrim was only presented as a visual and style achievement wrapped around a decent film. It's exactly that.

'tis a sad day, when geeks can't like a truly geeky movie. When was the last time you saw a truly kick-ass movie with a Forbidden Planet referrence or a Guitar Wolf poster. "very juvenile, shallow movie." We are all very sorry it wasn't "Shakespear in Love" for you, Brian (or someother elitist everyman), but, and no offense, you probably didn't even like Starship Troopers.
I thought Del Toro got lap-band surgery. He now appears to be fatter than ever. I want him to be healthy so he can continue to make movies for a long time to come.
This movie ranks #3 on my all time favorite list… maybe higher. There's never been a movie like it. Its plot is better than 90% of other movies, and the plot is the weakest element. It's the post production that turns it into a classic. The whole freaking movie is edited like a song. There's a rhythm to every single cut. There are so many layers to every scene that… that… geeeah! This shit's gonna blow up like the Big Lebowski when it hits video. By the way, I have a masters degree in film, so I'm totally more correcter than anyone who disagrees with me. … Whew. I haven't had a good geek-out in a while. Thanks for putting up with it.
I admit, I ate my words on this movie. It looked terrible from the trailers and I didin't really want to see it. Went anyway and it's one of my favorite movie of the year. I don't know what kind of puckered bunghole you have to have to not enjoy Scott Pilgrim.

Its funny that the only people I hear liking this movie are folks on Chud. No one I know out in the really real world enjoyed it, and several of them were people looking forward to it. I think this movie got the fate it deserved.
If you liked this movie you a) don't know what actually goes into a well made movie and b) most likely think you and your dipshit friends are the center of the universe and destined for great things. The amazing thing is that much like this movie the world will severely disappoint you.
Edgar Wright is the best director working today. Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, even his bit parts on Look Around You, all are genius.Those who claim they saw it, but still hate on it, obviously didn't see it.
Now that I've had the movie at home, any friend I've shown that was hesitant about seeing the movie in theaters thinks it's a great flick. I think the movie was beyond undersold on Michael Cera's cutesy factor when the movie is so much more.
I live in the real world and I had a blast watching this movie.

I really liked this movie and a) have a pretty good idea of what goes into a well-made movie, b) understand perfectly that me and my dipshit friends are just a micro-cluster on the outer reaches of the dipshit universe, and c) also know that you'd have to be a massive dickhead to define a person based on their enjoyment of one film. Much like this movie, the world continues to surprise me with unexpected little moments of joy and laughter.
lol. This film makes for amusing threads. You'd think we were discussing Dogville or something equally polarizing, instead of a mediocre teen comedy that wasn't bad or good enough to warrant much attention in the first place.
I live in the real world and thought the movie was good. it's a good movie, but nothing special. Chud should have advertise Enter the Void or Winter's Bone, not this good, but nothing special movie.

Did I like the film? Hell yes, one of the best of the year.

Do I understand how the fuck anyone can not like this film? No, it was a goddamn masterpiece that had me wanting to turn around and buy a ticket to the next showing as soon as it was over.
I was quite looking forward to this mainly due to Edgar's track record, but I didn't like the movie after watching it. The younger emo hipster demographic is quite small, but I think that's really the people this would have appealed to.
Loved this movie and also live in the real world, and hipsters are the bad guys; not the demo
The film took creative chances and, though I felt it fell apart during the last 1/3, I really enjoyed it. I think it's an interesting and highly-entertaining film that isn't entirely successful. I don't understand the hate for it, though. There is too much about it that is unquestionably good to just shit on it.
I thought the movie was awesome, for the most part. Having been an avid fan of the comics before hand though, I gotta say, Michael Cera just fell totally flat in the role of Scott. Mary Elizabeth Winstead didn't come off as too likeable in playing Ramona either. All the rest of the casting? Aces. As was the visual style and effects, which stuck close to the source material.
So, is it too much to say that this was a good movie with bad leads (who, at least in my case, are the sole source of any antipathy I have to the film).
Long story short – it was a mixed bag, but had redeeming factors for sure (in my opinion, of course).
@geekzapoppin: that's spot on my assessment of the film as well. It doesn't have nearly as much emotional resonance as the series of books it's based on; and in that regard, it's a failure as an adaptation. But it's a mid-budget, mainstream film whose director took a considerable amount of risk. That's a tough thing to come by these days. I'm also glad I'm not the only one feeling the Skyline hate. That film looks like it was made for the people who thought ID4 was just a little bit too heady.
If you hate this movie, you don't deserve the medium of film.
Sometimes I suggest that Superman III is my favourite one – I'm not sure this is actually true. But I'll defend that film til I'm dead and gone.
